Dr. Sean M. Heuvel is a faculty member at Christopher Newport University (CNU), in Newport News, Virginia, where he teaches in the Department of Leadership and American Studies. He holds a B.A. in Government, an M.Ed. and Ph.D. in Educational Leadership/Higher Education Administration from the College of William and Mary, and an M.A. in History from the University of Richmond.

An active scholar in the fields of history and leadership studies, he has written numerous articles for refereed journals, encyclopedias, and magazines. His interests include higher education history, the college presidency, higher education leadership, the American Revolution, the American Civil War, and World War II. Active in foreign study programs at CNU, Heuvel has also lectured at Harris Manchester College, Oxford University, in the United Kingdom. He and his wife and two children live in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Culture Clash: A Case Study of the Issues that Non-Traditional College Presidents Face in Adjusting to Academic Culture

This study examined the issues that non-traditional college presidents face in adjusting to acade... more This study examined the issues that non-traditional college presidents face in adjusting to academic culture. Defined here as presidents who come from non-academic backgrounds, such as government, business, or the military, this paper used a case study design and pragmatist approach to analyze the experiences of three such individuals, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower at Columbia University (1948-1953), former North Carolina Gov. Terry Sanford at Duke University (1969-1985), and former U.S. Sen. Paul S. Trible at Christopher Newport University (1996-present). A combination of historical research and interview formats were utilized to learn about the experiences that Eisenhower, Sanford, and Trible had in adjusting to academic culture at their respective universities. This study found that Eisenhower had a very difficult adjustment experience while Sanford and Trible were more successful in adapting to academic culture. This study concluded that for non-traditional presidents, vision, adaptability, commitment to institution, and prior academic exposure were key issues in facilitating a successful adjustment experience to academic culture.

The Old College Goes to War: The Civil War Service of William and Mary Students

A stroll around the modern-day William and Mary campus in Williamsburg, Virginia offers visitors ... more A stroll around the modern-day William and Mary campus in Williamsburg, Virginia offers visitors many links to its colonial history. The re-created town of Colonial Williamsburg, the Wren Building, and statues and portraits of famous alumni, such as Presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe, all conjure up images of William and Mary's eighteenth century grandeur. Conversely, evidence of the college's rich Civil War history is more obscure. Although scholars have recently examined the role of Williamsburg's residents in this conflict, little is known about the wartime activities of those individuals linked to William and Mary. Using letters, depositions, and memoirs along with selected secondary sources, this study examines the wartime service of the college's students.

I was reminded of this a few years ago while studying some of my colonial New England ancestors. As a historian specializing in the American Revolution, I am always eager to learn about relatives who participated in that conflict. Recently, while researching my Revolutionary War ties to one family – the Lorings of Massachusetts – I was surprised to discover a relationship to Admiral Sir John Wentworth Loring, known for his distinguished Royal Navy service during the Age of Nelson and beyond. What intrigued me about this Boston-area native was how he began his career as a destitute, Loyalist exile, but ended it as an affluent and respected Royal Navy leader. Moreover, Loring excelled in both operational and administrative commands, earning admiration from his peers and knighthoods from King William IV and Queen Victoria.

Despite these achievements, modern historians have not really examined Loring in any great depth. He has been mentioned as a minor reference in published works about his parents, Joshua Loring Jr. and Elizabeth Lloyd “Betsey” Loring, or other close relatives. What follows here is a brief biographical sketch that provides a closer, more detailed, look at this compelling Royal Navy leader. It is part of a more complete study of Loring and his family that is currently underway.
