This paper realizes the hazards of chromium contamination and pollution caused in the use of chro... more This paper realizes the hazards of chromium contamination and pollution caused in the use of chrome composite leather-clad (CCLC) rollers commonly used in cotton roller ginning industries and attempts to eliminate the chromium contamination and pollution during this environmental impact assessment (EIA) process. The cotton roller ginning process is the mechanical separation of cotton fibres from their seeds by means of one or more rollers to which fibres adhere while the seeds are impeded and struck off or pulled loose. Most of the cotton ginning operations are done using roller gins. The CCLC roller coverings contain about 18,000 to 30,000 mg/kg (ppm) as total chromium of trivalent and hexavalent forms which are toxic to human health. When the seed-cotton is ginned, due to the persistent rubbing of CCLC rollers over the fixed knives, the cotton and its products get contaminated with the total chromium of trivalent and hexavalent forms. Gin mill workers are exposed to the cotton dust and chromium pollution and are susceptible to health hazards such as premature death, cancer, byssinosis, and ulcers in cotton ginning air environment since toxic effects are produced by prolonged contact with airborne or solid or liquid chromium compounds even in small quantities. Noise pollution of agricultural ginning machinery in seed-cotton ginning mills has been found out to be 102-103 dB(A) decibel levels. To offset this problem, pollution-free rubberized cotton fabric (RCF) eco-friendly rollers for both the laboratory and commercial studies have been designed, fabricated and used in experiments in rollers gins. This nullifies chromium contamination and pollution during the complete process. Cotton technological parameters are well proven for commercial acceptance.

This research article realises the hazards of chromium contamination and pollution caused by usin... more This research article realises the hazards of chromium contamination and pollution caused by using chrome composite leather-clad (CCLC) rollers that are commonly used in the cotton roller ginning industries and attempts to eliminate the chromium contamination and pollution during the cotton ginning process. The chromium traces found contain hexavalent chromium being adsorbed from chromium-contaminated lint, yarn, fabrics, seeds, by-products and textile effluent. Chromium acts in three ways on humans, viz. (i) local action explained as dermatitis or absorption through skin, (ii) direct inhalation and (iii) ingestion or absorption into the stomach. Toxic effects are produced by prolonged contact with airborne or solid or liquid chromium compounds even in small quantities because of their properties, viz. carcinogenicity, mutagenicity and corrosiveness. Traces of Cr (VI) are found even in analar grade trivalent compounds, and complications do arise due to reduction in the nature of these traces that affect the organic tissues of the body. These regenerating effects occur rapidly and are dependent on the dose. This research article realises the hazards of chromium contamination and pollution caused by the use of dust-producing grinding of CCLC rollers that are commonly used in the cotton roller ginning industries and attempts to nullify this problem during cotton ginning. This research has been carried out with the following objectives: to identify and study the environmental health effects existing with the present CCLC rollers being used in the Indian cotton roller ginning industries; to conduct an environmental health impact assessment in Indian cotton roller ginning factories during the research years of 1998-2018; to design and develop an eco-friendly chrome-free roller and evaluate its performance with reference to environmental health effects and techno-commercial aspects in the ginning industries. With the author&#39;s research background and practical experience in cotton ginning and textile industries, this study is attempted to eliminate the environmental health impacts to a great extent at the source itself, through a suitable design and development of an eco-friendly, pollution-free, chromeless roller for cotton roller gins. An eco-friendly roller ginning process has been designed and developed for replacing the conventional CCLC roller ginning process, to eliminate the chromium contamination and pollution from cotton roller ginning industries and to meet the requirements of World Health Organisation standards, while maintaining high-quality spun yarns and woven fabrics which meet the international standards.

Sustainable cotton roller ginning process for Indian cotton double gins has been devised. Most of the cotton ginning operations is performed by using double roller (DR) ginning machines which serve an important role in the Indian ginning industries. The rollers used in these industries are made of Chrome Composite Leather-Clads (CCLC) covering fixed to a shaft. These rollers add to chromium burden of the environment, which display toxic and / or carcinogenic properties. Cotton, grown on the plant as seed-cotton (or kapas) is first processed for getting separation into lint cotton and seed in cotton ginning industries. Due to persistent dust-producing, grinding action of CCLC rollers over stationary knives in ginning machines, they are wearing out constantly and exorbitantly contaminating cotton and its products with chromium. The dust-producing, grinding CCLC rollers cause air pollution problems in the mill environment. Mill and gin workers are directly exposed to this pollution, and are vulnerable to health hazards. Chromium contaminate lint cotton beyond eco-friendly limits. There is a need to conduct studies on characterization and environmental and health assessment of chromium pollution from cotton roller ginning process due to these rollers. Therefore, an exhaustive research was undertaken on characterization and assessment of chromium pollution from cotton ginning industries.

Reciprocal accountability in education system is based on the performance assessment of competency-based education approach so as ensure the students achieve critical knowledge and skills. Continuous improvement in education system is an education system for education quality and performance that is everybody in the system from the capital to class room must be responsible for such of those aspects of education quality and performance that get controlled. Total quality management (TQM) or Continuous Improvements System (CIS) can be defined as set of systematic activities carried by an institution to efficiently achieve institutional objectives that satisfies beneficiaries at the appropriate time and price. TQM or CIS can be a comprehensive and structured approach to an educational management that seeks to improve the educational services through refinements in response to continuous feedback. Educational quality is defined as the totality of features and characteristics of services that bear on its ability and efficiency in terms of knowledge and character to satisfy a given or implied need. TQM of an education sector that shall achieve academic and research excellence and thus lead to SD. International Organizational for Standardization (ISO)'s 9000 standards focus continuous improvement system (CIS) or quality management (TQM) of all sorts of organizations. It defines the features on quality management system (QMS) that need to be in place to ensure that institutions identify and focus on improving areas where they have significant deficiencies. The objectives of this research , (i) To study of reciprocal accountability and total quality management in education sector and its ideal implementation towards sustainable development, (ii) to conduct action-based and field research on CIS to present QM ideas on education, (iii) to identify quality compliance requirements (QCRs) for an educational sector adherence to QM standards based on an educational research conducted on quality circles (QCs) duly launched in twelve educational institutions in south India and (iv) to promote sustainable policy recommendation to strengthen quality and quantity educational services. Education coupled with entrepreneurial process is an intricate SD process which is a targeted area of research to alleviate poverty from the emerging enterprising spirit. Output of the process is an international and national educational service to the beneficiaries concerning to both educational quality and quantity management. TQM or CIS processes are divided into four sequential categories such as plan, do, check, and act (PDCA cycle) for continuous process improvement. In the planning phase, educationalists define the problem to be addressed, collect relevant data, and ascertain the root cause of the academic problem; in the doing phase, educationalists develop and implement a comprehensive solution , and decide upon a measurement to gauge its and efficiency; in the checking phase, educationalists confirm the result through before-and-after data comparison; in the acting phase, educationalists document their results, inform others about process changes, and make recommendations for the problem to be addressed in the next PDCA cycle. It is concluded that CIS as a management approach of an educational institution centered on quality, based on the participation of all its members and aiming at long term success through beneficiary satisfaction and benefits to all members of the institution and society. CIS in an educational sector is based on quality management from the beneficiary's point of view. Based on this action-based and field research conducted on CIS or TQM, sustainable policy recommendation may be taken to strengthen both quality and quantity educational services concerned to both knowledge and character in educational sector. In the present article, importance of possible inclusion of CIS and steps involved for an implementation of framework in education sector are discussed.

Evaluation of research data brings findings of verification of effectiveness of the adaptation of external conditions, which was used during the program. Environment and Quality Management (EQM) in Higher Education Institutions HEIs) mitigates environment and quality impacts that succeeds to environment and quality education. EQM principles stimulate environment and quality education in HEIs for SND. Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process requires multidisciplinary approach that is necessary in providing a prevention mechanism for environmental management and protection in any development. EIA process is designed to identify and predict the potential effects of the physical, biological, ecological, socio-economical, cultural environment and on human health and well-being are adequately protected. International organization for Standardization (ISO)'s 14000 and 9000 standards focus on EQM of all sorts of organizations apart from more than 19500 published standards. Environmental Management System (EMS) and Quality Management System (QMS) have been separately featured in ISO. The article highlights EQM for the HEIs to achieve research and academic excellence. Total Quality Management (TQM) can be broadly defined as a set of systematic activities carried by an institution to efficiently achieve institutional objectives that satisfies beneficiaries at the appropriate time and price. The definition of quality is "The totality of features and characteristics of products or services that bear on its ability, efficacy and values to satisfy a given or implied need". TQM is a comprehensive and structured approach to an educational integrated management that seeks to improve the quality of educational services through ongoing refinements in response to continuous feedback. Thus this standard definition of quality is applicable commonly to both products and services that is stated and unstated. TQM has an important role to play in addressing quality issues surrounding the higher educational development. The CCLC rollers contain about 18000 to 36000 mg/kg (ppm) total chromium of trivalent and hexavalent forms which are toxic and carcinogenic to human health. When the seed-cotton is processed in Double Roller (DR) ginning machines, the lint is contaminated with chromium of about 140 to 1990 ppm as against the safety limits of 0.1 ppm. During the ginning process due to persistent rubbing of leather over stationary knife, chromium particles are carried into the lint such that the spun yarns and cotton by-products contain about 100 to 200 ppm, which according to world environmental standards should not be more than 0.1 ppm. Gin and mill workers are directly exposed to this carcinogenic substance. To offset this problem, pollution-free Rubberized Cotton Fabric (RCF) rollers have been fabricated, used and experimented in roller gins. RCF roller covering is made of multiple layers of fabrics bonded together using white rubber compounding which has a surface finish conducive to high ginning efficiency. This nullifies chromium contamination and pollution during the ginning process. On the basis of the design and development of various rollers with subsequent performance evaluation studies, pollution-free RCF washers/ rollers have been demonstrated with reference to techno-commercial and eco-friendliness in ginneries.

Properties of Covering Materials of Roller Used in Cotton Roller Gin

The author of this book has investigated and documented the properties of cotton gin-roller cover... more The author of this book has investigated and documented the properties of cotton gin-roller coverings and background of the roller ginning process. Most of the cotton ginning operations are performed by using double roller (DR) ginning machines which serve an important role in the ginning factories. The rollers used in these industries are commonly made of Chrome Composite Leather-Clads (CCLC) covering fixed to a shaft. The CCLC coverings contain about 18 000 to 36 000 mg/kg (ppm) of chromium . When the seed-cotton is processed in DR gins, the lint cotton is contaminated with chromium of about 140 to 1990 ppm as total chromium, which is carcinogenic substance as against the safe limits of 0.1 ppm. Also, gin and textile mill workers are directly exposed to this carcinogenic substance and are vulnerable to health hazards. To offset this problem, pollution-free rubberized cotton fabric (RCF) washers/ rollers both for laboratory and commercial studies have been fabricated and experimented.This could be used commercially as an alternative in the roller ginning industries for the benefit of environment, society, mill owners, traders, workers, employees and the government.
