Every healthy forest has a vision and implementation behind it. That's what our project team, Alexandra Alexandrova, Marina Laura Fernández Curutchet, Maria José de la Torre Garbayo from Preferred by Nature, along with Horizon UE, has been testing on the ground this season to support the SMURF (Sustainable Management of Small Forest Properties for Resilient Forests) project. In Monte Palancares, Cuenca, we compared protected and conventionally managed pine forests to see how biodiversity indicators change depending on how the land is managed 🌲 In Bulgaria's State Hunting Unit Vitinya, we surveyed beech, oak, and mixed hornbeam-beech-oak forests, comparing harvested and untouched plots, with a few surprise visitors along the way (hello, mouflons and deer 🦌) This field testing is a key step in developing SMURF's biodiversity methodology, part of a wider effort to help small forest owners across Europe manage their land sustainably while unlocking new income through carbon and ecosystem service payments. These challenges don't work alone, so neither do we. Biodiversity, climate, and smallholders aren't separate issues; they're linked, and increasingly shaped by EU regulations, market expectations, and supply chain resilience. Preferred by Nature helps organisations turn these connected challenges into practical action, through certification, advisory services, and on-the-ground implementation like this field testing. Find more about the SMURF project on: https://bit.ly/SMURF_PBN ____________________________________ Preferred by Nature's Projects This initiative was delivered through Preferred by Nature's Mission Driven Projects team, which designs and implements collaborative sustainability projects that create positive impacts for people, nature and climate. By working with businesses, governments, donors and local communities, we develop practical solutions that strengthen sustainable livelihoods, protect ecosystems and support responsible supply chains. With more than 30 years of experience, Preferred by Nature delivers projects that drive lasting change around the world. Behind every shipment of coffee, cocoa, or timber is a question companies now have to answer: where did this come from, and was any forest cleared to grow it? 🍃 The EU Deforestation Regulation covers coffee, cocoa, palm oil, cattle, soy, rubber, and timber. Preferred by Nature and the National Forestry Institute, are hosting a live webinar (in Czech) to walk through the latest requirements and how to prepare: 📅 25 August 2026 🕙 10:00–11:30 CET 🇨🇿 Conducted in Czech Register to save your spot through this link: https://lnkd.in/eJAM6wPt #PreferredByNature #EUDR #Deforestation #SupplyChainSustainability #Sustainability #Compliance Tereza Toulová Michal Rezek

The European Commission has updated the list of products covered by the EU Deforestation Regulation. The change, adopted 13 July 2026, followed a consultation with almost 4,800 stakeholder submissions! 🍃 Some products, like coffee extracts and certain oil palm derivatives, are now in scope for the first time. Others, like re-treaded tyres and leather products, have been taken out. There is also welcome relief for businesses: samples, reusable packaging, and free marketing materials are now excluded from due diligence obligations. If you trade in cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, soy, wood or rubber, it is worth checking whether these changes affect you. Read how our technical brief walks through the change on this link: https://bit.ly/EUDRJuly. ______________________________ Preferred by Nature's Regulatory Impact Programme This initiative was developed through Preferred by Nature's Regulatory Impact Programme, which transforms regulatory intelligence into practical services and solutions for businesses. By continuously monitoring policy developments, legislation and market trends, the Programme helps strengthen Preferred by Nature's due diligence offerings and ensures our support remains aligned with evolving sustainability requirements. 📢 RIA is now opening not one, but two more public consultations on pilot country risk assessments! This time we have focused on the Sweden Forest and Indonesian cocoa sectors. Each pilot assessment puts into practice the joint indicators, methodology, and processes developed by RIA, and is informed by legislation, documented sources, and contributions from local stakeholders. 📝 The consultation seeks to gather feedback on the technical content, including validation or challenge of the findings, as well as the identification of any gaps. The consultation is open to a wide range of stakeholders across economic, social, environmental, and institutional groups. ⏳ Consultation is open until August 15th 2026. In Rokan Hulu, Sumatra, palm oil smallholders are working through a question that runs across commodity sourcing today: how do you make a living from the land while also protecting it? Preferred by Nature is part of a partnership with Ferrero, the Sustainable Agriculture Network, and several global and local supply chain partners that working together to answer that directly. The goal: support 5,400 smallholders in adopting regenerative agriculture practices, help 1,000 of them work toward RSPO/ISPO certification and EUDR alignment, and restore 1,000 hectares of degraded land. This November, we're bringing that work to the Innovation Forum - Sustainable Commodities and Landscapes Forum 2026 in Amsterdam. As a Knowledge Partner, Preferred by Nature is proud to contribute to conversations that help shape more resilient and responsible commodity supply chains. Our Senior Director, Jakob Ryding, will speak alongside Anders Saxbol (Ferrero) and Zulfa Amira Zaed (Setara Jambi) on what this partnership looks like in practice. Before building a single new tool, the FIT for FAIR Colombia team asked a simple question: what already exists? 🤔 The answer came from reviewing 57 existing tools built for EUDR and CSDDD compliance, and talking directly to 16 people across government, trade associations, NGOs, and cooperation agencies. What they found was not a shortage of tools, but it was a pattern. There’s a strong coverage on environmental topics, mainly deforestation, as well as real gaps on the social and legal side. That finding shaped everything that came next. Swipe through, or check https://lnkd.in/e_NcEk3S to explore the research findings and the six practical guides developed by Preferred by Nature, Cooperación Alemana para el Desarrollo Colombia and Confecámaras - Confederación Colombiana de Cámaras de Comercio! 🌱 __________________________ Preferred by Nature’s Sustainability Advisory This initiative was delivered through Preferred by Nature’s Sustainability Advisory Services, which helps companies, organisations, and governments develop and implement practical sustainability solutions tailored to their needs and aligned with international frameworks. Every morning rubber farmers in Manzhong Village bring their latex to local collection stations. Today, that journey ends at a station designed to better support both people and the environment! 🍃 This new eco-friendly station, built through the GPSNR Shared Investment Mechanism with Linglong Tire, local communities and Xishuangbanna Weifeng Rubber, comes with clean toilets (a meaningful addition for female farmers in particular), wastewater recovery, better weighing and EUDR-ready digital traceability. It is now run by the village group itself and supports more than 50 households. It is one part of a bigger first phase: over 1,500 hectares of FSC-certified rubber forest, training for more than 300 farmers, and new agroforestry like rubber and cocoa intercropping. In this project, Project Division at Preferred by Nature worked with Shandong Linglong Tyre, Xishuangbanna Weifeng Rubber and local communities to design and implement a landscape project that improves livelihoods while supporting more sustainable and traceable rubber production. Beyond building the collection station, the project also supported FSC certification, farmer training and the introduction of agroforestry practices.
