A quieter Atlantic hurricane season – what does it mean for shipping? The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) now expects El Niño to strengthen, with a 97% chance it lasts into early spring 2027 and an 81% chance it becomes very strong between October and December 2026. Here's why that matters: El Niño creates stronger high-altitude winds over the Atlantic. That's why NOAA is calling for a below-normal season this year: 8–14 named storms, 3–6 hurricanes, and 1–3 major hurricanes, with 70% confidence, versus a typical season’s 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes. Warmer Atlantic waters and weaker trade winds usually fuel storms, but this year they're not enough to outweigh that wind shear effect. For shipping, fewer storms typically means fewer route deviations, fewer port closures, and shorter queues once ports reopen – all of which add cost, delay, and risk for vessels and crew. A curious statistic surfaced recently at ZeroNorth: more than 30 employees share the same alma mater – Tolani Maritime Institute (TMI), the Pune-based maritime academy that has spent nearly three decades turning out marine engineers and deck officers for the world's merchant fleet. These alumni graduated between 2002 and 2024, and they now work within our sales, engineering, product, operations, data and customer success teams. Affiliated with the INDIAN MARITIME UNIVERSITY and approved by the Directorate General of Shipping, India, TMI is one of the country's largest dedicated maritime academies, training students in nautical science and marine engineering, spending years navigating merchant ships through some of the world's busiest and most demanding waters. That is precisely the skill set the shipping industry now needs on land. When seafarers move onshore, they bring real operational knowledge with them – a working understanding of fuel consumption, engine performance, voyage planning and regulatory pressure, built from years on the bridge and in the engine room. Super Typhoon Bavi: One of the strongest storms this year charges towards Taiwan and Eastern China In 2026, the storm season in the western Pacific is extremely active. Super Typhoon Bavi is the third storm across the ocean basins in 2026 to reach the highest intensity category, equivalent to a top-of-the-scale Category 5 hurricane. Bavi is now tracking across the Philippine Sea as a massive typhoon, and its path leads directly through some of the world's busiest shipping corridors. 🌀 Luzon Strait: Although the typhoon will not affect the Philippines directly, gale to severe gale winds, storm-force gusts, very rough seas, and heavy rainfall are likely from Wednesday night, peaking Thursday through Saturday as the storm passes north of Luzon. 🌀 Taiwan/Taiwan Strait: The typhoon is expected to pass just north of Taiwan between Friday and Saturday, which brings dangerous storm-force winds and waves through the strait from Thursday evening. 🌀 East China Sea: Bavi is expected to make a final landfall on China's east coast between Saturday evening and Sunday morning. Because of the typhoon's large size, storm-force winds and high to very high seas can be expected across the southern East China Sea from Friday until Sunday. The storm's exact strength from day to day is harder to pin down, which is why conditions are being continuously monitored by our weather team.
