Becoming an Outdoors Woman

“Becoming an Outdoors Woman” (BOW) is a national, hands-on education program designed specifically for adult women (18+) to learn outdoor skills. Participants often describe the program as empowering, confidence-building, and community-oriented, offering not just practical outdoor knowledge but also friendship and encouragement in a relaxed, welcoming setting.

The BOW program’s goal is to break down barriers that might keep women from getting involved in outdoor activities by providing a supportive, non-competitive environment for learning.  The classes are designed for all ability levels — from complete beginners to women with some experience.

The traditional BOW workshop lasts 3 days, usually from Friday afternoon through Sunday. Participants can choose from a wide variety of classes, including hunting and shooting sports such as rifle, handgun, shotgun, and archery; trapping; fishing activities like fly-fishing and basic angling; and outdoor skills such as camping, backpacking, and navigation with map and compass. Other offerings may include outdoor cooking, wild game preparation, and nature or wildlife-focused skills like plant identification, photography, foraging, and first aid. Typically there are 4 sessions, and participants pick one class for each session. Registration generally covers meals, lodging, and the necessary equipment or materials, though the specifics can vary by state.

Classes fill up quickly, but there may be other learning opportunities in your area through different groups. Check here:
