On 29 October 2026, SUPSI Istituto sostenibilità applicata all'ambiente costruito (ISAAC) will host #SolarMachines, a unique event dedicated to solar architecture, developed within the SOLARCHITECTURE initiative and organised in cooperation with Solar Agentur Schweiz, on the occasion of the European and Swiss Solar Prize. #SolarMachines starts from a provocation: the energy transition will not only be measured in kilowatt-hours. It will be measured in the quality of the buildings, cities and landscapes it produces. The question is no longer whether photovoltaics should be visible or hidden, added or integrated. The real question is architectural: what kind of spaces, materials, envelopes and public places can emerge when energy becomes a design force? Linked to a forthcoming book, a series of docufilms and collaborations with leading international architecture practices, the event brings together innovation, architects, leading industries and education. 🥇 Last week, we gathered in the Netherlands for our General Assembly, hosted by our partner Lightyear, and we had the chance to get our hands on one of the demonstrators of our project, a test car with the following specs: 🚗 Designed from the ground up to have a very low drag coefficient ☀️ Contains 5 m2 of glass-based solar panels. 🌍 The car can produce an additional 177 km of range based on an average summer week in the Netherlands. 🚀 The car is serving the purposes of the project, aiming to develop new Lightweight solar panels that can be integrated in vehicles. Lightyear is developing polymer-based panels, with a lower total weight that can translate to additional range. The demonstrator car is currently gathering data to prove the validity of the developed solutions.
