GEO gets you cited in ChatGPT answers. It doesn't get you booked, bought, or used. A traveler asks which hotel to book in New York. Your hotel luckily show up. You still have zero hold on what happens next. Now picture: "book me a 4-star room in New York, 3 nights, under $200." An agent with access to your live inventory checks availability and closes the booking right from the conversation. That's not GEO. That's an MCP app. 60% of Google searches in 2025 ended with zero clicks. Being cited in search results doesn't convert anymore. OpenAI merged ChatGPT and Codex, and with that merged apps into plugins. Not sure what a plugin actually is? A plugin bundles three parts: a skill (tells the model when to use your integration), an MCP server (the tools), and a GPT app (the UI in the conversation). Your existing MCP apps carry over automatically, no resubmission needed. Building new? Still start with MCP! The real signal is discoverability: OpenAI says ChatGPT will soon recommend and install plugins mid-conversation, echoing what Claude's connector directory already does. ChatGPT Apps Are Dead. Long Live Plugins. Yesterday, OpenAI shipped a massive release. Beyond the new, super powerful models, they also merged Apps and Plugins. What are Plugins? 🚀 MCP + Skills. You can now add Skills to your app, making plugins reusable capabilities that agents can discover and use. Is my ChatGPT App dead? 🚀 No. Existing apps continue to work and have been moved into the Plugins section. No need to resubmit them. Has dynamic discovery changed? 🚀 Yes. It appears to have changed, and we're still digging into exactly how it works. More insights coming later today.
