Better science, better medicines — and a clearer path for NAM adoption. A recent Inside EMA interview with Stefano Ponzano, Head of European Medicines Agency’s Office of Translational Sciences, highlights several principles that are becoming increasingly important for the regulatory adoption of New Approach Methodologies. The objective is not to eliminate animal testing overnight. It is to build a progressive transition toward more human-relevant and predictive methodologies, while maintaining the level of evidence required to protect patient safety. Several key messages stand out: 🔹 NAMs should be considered as part of a weight-of-evidence approach, combining advanced in vitro models, Organ-on-Chip technologies, computational modelling, AI and, when still scientifically justified, targeted animal studies. 🔹 Organ-on-Chip technologies are explicitly recognised as an important component of the NAM ecosystem. 🔹 The objective is not necessarily to reproduce an existing animal test one-to-one, but to demonstrate that a methodology can reliably address a clearly defined regulatory question and context of use. 🔹 Early interaction with regulators is becoming essential. The European Medicines Agency is encouraging dialogue with technology developers before methodologies are incorporated into formal regulatory submissions, helping align evidence generation with regulatory expectations. 🔹 Finally, international regulatory convergence will be critical, with collaboration across European Medicines Agency, FDA, Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency, Health Canada | Santé Canada, Therapeutic Goods Administration, Swissmedic and other agencies. For NETRI, these principles reinforce a core approach to NAM development: Start from the context of use. Define the decision that needs to be supported. Generate the right biological and functional evidence. The future of Organ-on-Chip and MPS technologies will not depend only on increasingly sophisticated models. It will depend on their ability to generate reproducible, decision-relevant and regulatory-actionable data. From validation to implementation: NAMs are entering a new era. On July 21, NETRI joined France Biotech, Ipsen and Servier for a webinar dedicated to the impact of regulatory evolution on the use of animals for scientific purposes. Benoît Maisonneuve - PhD, Director Strategic Partnerships & Regulatory Affairs at NETRI, provided an overview of the rapidly evolving NAMs regulatory landscape across the US, Europe, the UK and Asia, while Thibault Honegger, CEO & Co-founder of NETRI, joined the industry roundtable on the concrete integration of NAMs into drug development. One major conclusion emerged: The question is no longer only whether a NAM works. The question is: for which decision can we trust it? Across regions, regulatory pathways differ. But a common scientific framework is progressively emerging: Context of Use → Human Biological & Mechanistic Relevance → Technical Characterization → Fit-for-Purpose → Regulatory Confidence For NETRI, this evolution reinforces a core conviction: the value of human-relevant models is not simply to reproduce biology or replace an animal model one-to-one. It is to generate actionable human data early enough to improve drug-development decisions. This is also the rationale behind NETRI's work in chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN), where the company is progressively building the evidence required to move from a scientifically relevant model toward a clearly defined regulatory use case. The next phase for NAMs will require more than technology. It will require standardization, reproducibility, industrial deployment, regulatory dialogue and evidence generated around clearly defined Contexts of Use. Wrapping up an intense and energizing week at BIO International in San Diego for our CEO & Co-founder Thibault Honegger. A week filled with strategic discussions with pharma, biotech, investors, translational science leaders, and NAMs stakeholders — all converging around the same question: how can we make preclinical decision-making more human-relevant, more predictive, and more actionable? For NETRI, this week was a strong confirmation that the momentum around Neuron-as-a-Sensor technologies, organ-on-chip systems, functional electrophysiology, and AI-powered biological signatures is accelerating. From safety to efficacy, from pain and neurotoxicity to dermatology, inflammation, neuromuscular models and broader NAMs applications, the need for robust human-relevant platforms is becoming increasingly clear. More then 30 high level meetings on NETRI’s NaaS platform, our Digital Signature strategy, and the industrialization of functional NAMs for pharma decision-making. Our CEO and co-founder Thibault Honegger is now back in Lyon, but not for long... 🚀 NETRI joins Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE Lab program to accelerate its industrialization. This collaboration marks a major step in NETRI’s trajectory: bringing NAMs technologies and predictive biological models to an industrial scale, with the robustness, traceability, and reproducibility required by the pharmaceutical, chemical, and cosmetic industries.
