Building Better Education Starts With Better Data. Today, I had the pleasure of leading the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) delegation to meet with the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, to advance Ghana's Pilot Register-Based Education Statistics Project. Together with the National Identification Authority (NIA), we discussed how secure administrative data can transform education planning and improve outcomes for every child. We are grateful to the Honourable Minister for his strong support, for approving our key requests, and for graciously agreeing to chair the Project Steering Committee. His leadership will be instrumental in turning this national vision into reality. The project will help Ghana move from periodic data collection to a modern system that provides timely, reliable education statistics. Over time, it will enable us to follow learners through the education system, strengthen planning, improve resource allocation, and support evidence-based policymaking. Once successfully piloted, the model can be scaled across the country and extended to other sectors. I also extend my sincere appreciation to the National Identification Authority for its continued partnership and commitment to this important national initiative. Let me assure all Ghanaians that data privacy, protection and confidentiality remain paramount. Personal information will remain secure and protected under the Statistical Service Act and the Data Protection Act. Only data necessary for statistical purposes will be used, and individual records will never be disclosed. The future of education is not built on assumptions. It is built on trusted data, strong partnerships and bold leadership. What better way to make it through a European heat wave than in the company of colleagues from Ghana Statistical Service, Vietnam's National Bureau of Statistics, Haut Commissariat au Plan of Morocco and Statistics Denmark - International Consulting ? ☀️📊 We brought together communication teams from all partner countries to exchange experiences, challenges, and ideas on how to make statistics more accessible and engaging. Across continents, national statistical offices face many of the same questions: How do we reach new audiences? How do we communicate complex data clearly? And how do we ensure that statistics are used and understood? 🌍 The exchange showcased inspiring examples from all partners: 🇬🇭 Ghana shared their impressive experience organising a national hackathon for university students, demonstrating how to engage young people with data. 🇲🇦 Morocco and 🇻🇳 Vietnam highlighted their journalist training programmes, strengthening data literacy and helping sharpen the “data pens” of media professionals. 🇩🇰 Denmark showcased their innovative “My Life with Statistics” platform, bringing statistics to life for 13–16-year-olds 👩🏫 Ultimately, statistics are powerful - but only if they are understood! Today the Ministry of Finance handed us the keys. There's a story in those keys. This block began as a Statistical Service building. For more than fifty years, the Ministry of Finance made its home here. When they moved into their new building, they didn't simply leave. They arranged for it to come back to us, properly and formally, with the Hon. Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, present to hand it over himself. As I said to him this morning: Ministers do not often turn up in person to hand over keys. But you have. And that tells us something. Here's what this means in plain terms. More room for our people. More room for the work. Better numbers for Ghana. The Minister was clear about what he expects in return, and so are we. A rebased Consumer Price Index, so inflation reflects what Ghanaians actually buy today, not what we bought years ago. A rebased GDP, so the size of our economy counts the work Ghanaians are actually doing now. Employment statistics that show who is working, who isn't, and where the jobs are. That is the deal. A building for the truth. We accept. My thanks to the Hon. Minister and the Ministry of Finance. Not for the walls, but for what the gesture says: that Ghana's numbers matter enough to invest in. Every good decision this country makes starts with a good number. That is our job.
