🐋🐬World Whale and Dolphin Day 2026 🌍On 23 July 1982, the decision to ban commercial whaling marked a historic milestone in the global effort to protect cetaceans. Today, #WorldWhaleAndDolphinDay reminds us of our shared responsibility to protect these remarkable species, whose populations continue to face significant challenges and threats.🌊⚠️ To enhance our understanding and strengthen their conservation, we continue monitoring dolphin populations in the Thermaikos Gulf as part of the Thermaikos Biodiversity Project #TBP. 🐬Since 2021, through systematic monitoring surveys in the area and creating individual photo-ID catalogues for each species, a total of 367 dolphins have been identified in the Thermaikos Gulf. 🐬🐋World Whale and Dolphin Day 2026🐋🐬 🌊Οn July 23, 1982, the International Whaling Commission #IWC made a historic step for marine conservation: A global moratorium on commercial whaling was adopted, which came into force in 1986. This landmark decision, driven from decades of scientific research and collective international effort to raise awareness about whales and dolphins, marked a turning point for the global protection of cetaceans. 🌍 Since then, 23 July serves as a reminder for the importance of safeguarding these remarkable species, which continue to face increasing anthropogenic pressures and emerging threats. Recognizing that environmental conservation initiatives have real impact when they are grounded in scientific knowledge and foster a deeper understanding of our connection with the marine environment, 📊 we continue to study and highlight the rich biodiversity of the Thermaikos Gulf through the Thermaikos Biodiversity Project #TBP. 🌊 A special cinematic experience is coming to #Lemnos this Thursday! iSea, the Municipality of Lemnos, and the Ορνιθολογική BirdLife Greece invite you to the screening of the award-winning documentary "OCEAN with David Attenborough", as part of the Revive Our Ocean Greece initiative, coordinated by the Cyclades Preservation Fund (CPF). 📅 Thursday, 16 July 🕘 21:00 📍 Myrina, Municipal Theatre "Maroula" The screening is taking place in collaboration with the #RevivingLemnos Project, which aims to protect and restore the marine and coastal ecosystems of Eastern Lemnos, strengthening their resilience to climate change and contributing to the island’s sustainable development. 🌊🌍 "OCEAN with David Attenborough" delivers a powerful message of hope for the future of our seas. It highlights the unique beauty of the underwater world, the threats it faces, and success stories that demonstrate how nature can recover when it is effectively protected. Opening remarks will be delivered by the Mayor of Lemnos, Ms. Eleonora Georga, as well as representatives of iSea and the Hellenic Ornithological Society. 🎬 The film will be screened in English with Greek subtitles. 🎟️ Admission is free and seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. 🌊The event is part of the national effort to raise awareness of the importance of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and of the international 30×30 target — the protection of 30% of the world's oceans by 2030. 🦈Are sharks and rays the "dolphins and whales of our time"?🐬🐋 Today, there is growing recognition of the vital role these remarkable species play in the marine ecosystems.🌊 ⚠️Following the example set for dolphins and whales, whose strict protection gradually led to a profound shift in both public perception and international legislation regarding their conservation, international initiatives aimed at protecting sharks and rays continue to increase. Nevertheless, around 37% of shark, ray, and chimaera species worldwide are currently threatened with extinction, according to the IUCN. More than 60% of shark and ray products in Greek markets are sold with incorrect labels or no labels at all, making it difficult for consumers to know what they are really buying and eating. ⚠️ Many vulnerable and protected shark species are frequently mislabelled and sold in fish markets under different names.
