Exploring assessment practices at CAES: Connecting assessment and learning Centre for Applied English Studies Professional Development Seminar

In CAES, formal and informal assessments fulfil formative and/or summative purposes and significa... more In CAES, formal and informal assessments fulfil formative and/or summative purposes and significant effort is made to ensure the validity and reliability of these assessments. For example, course coordinators establish validity by designing assessment tasks that measure the intended learning outcomes of a course and ensure reliability through standardisation and moderation meetings. In the classroom, teachers enhance student learning through formal or ad hoc formative assessment tasks. In spite of these efforts, however, student and teacher feedback over the years have indicated that there is room for improvement either in design or implementation of some course assessments. This seminar thus aims to enhance the assessment literacy of CAES teachers. It first reports the results of a small-scale study that aimed to identify best practices of assessment at CAES. In this 2-part workshop, the CAES Out of Class Learning (OoCL) materials system (Moodle) and proc... more In this 2-part workshop, the CAES Out of Class Learning (OoCL) materials system (Moodle) and procedures will be shared with CAES colleagues. The first workshop will be a hands-on experience to familiarize colleagues with the OoCL Moodle layout and support ED teams in how to upload useful OoCL tasks, activities, resources, ideas and notes they wish to share with other teams. Time will be given to navigate around the system following guiding questions, view the tasks and resources already uploaded, give suggestions for further progression of the system and share OoCL materials ideas. In the second workshop, the OoCL team will warm up the session with a Q&A and further developments regarding the OoCL Moodle. This will be followed by a session in which Jane and Rebecca will talk about how, in an attempt to get to grips with Moodle this summer, they each developed a dedicated Moodle Site: 1 subject-specific, for Medical Terminology; and 1 generic, for Discussion Strategies. Venue: KK605 This workshop aims to explore how texts in disciplines can be exploited in order to ... more Venue: KK605 This workshop aims to explore how texts in disciplines can be exploited in order to teach key genres and encourage student genre awareness. The presenters adopt the view that there is no one single genre-based pedagogy and that different approaches may have something to offer genre teaching. Using texts and tasks, different stages of a teaching-learning cycle are explored that might aid genre acquisition/awareness. Workshop participants will be encouraged to discuss the relevance of the presented genre tasks for their disciplines and to suggest possible extensions of the tasks.

This chapter provides a framework for helping English language learners improve their listening s... more This chapter provides a framework for helping English language learners improve their listening skills by exploiting the potential of podcasts. A podcast is an audio broadcast that has been converted to an audio file, such as an MP3, and made available on the Internet. The file contains a special tag called an RSS feed, which allows users to subscribe to the file, much like a newspaper. Using a program that downloads and stores the podcasts (a podcast aggregator), users can then listen to the files on their MP3 players or computers. In this chapter the term podcast is used when referring to a broadcast program, such as BBC or NPR programs, and to individual audio files.
