  • Europe already has many of the technologies needed to decarbonise heavy industry. The challenge is no longer whether the solutions exist, but whether the right policy and market conditions are in place to enable their widespread deployment. We're pleased to join Environmental Defense Fund Europe's Business Innovation series, where our Director of Public Affairs and Sustainability, Susan McGarry, discusses how commercially available low-carbon cement technologies can help decarbonise an industry responsible for around 8% of global CO₂ emissions. The conversation explores why the next phase of industrial decarbonisation depends on creating the right conditions for innovation to scale, through standards, procurement, industrial policy and investment certainty.   • At the start of Ireland's EU Presidency, our Managing Director for Europe, Conor O'Riain, joined European leaders to discuss how the Single Market can unlock faster industrial decarbonisation. Ecocem was honoured to be invited by Minister Peter Burke, Ireland’s Minister for Enterprise, Tourism & Employment, to meet with European Ministers, Director Generals from the European Commission and national and EU Government representatives. As an Irish-founded company with a strong European presence, Ecocem was delighted to contribute to this important discussion at the beginning of Ireland's Presidency term. For 25 years, Ecocem has demonstrated that industrial competitiveness and decarbonisation can go hand in hand. As the EU seeks to strengthen its industrial base while accelerating the transition to net zero, innovative companies need a Single Market that enables new technologies to scale quickly. Conor shared Ecocem's experience of growing market access across Europe, building strong partnerships throughout the construction value chain and delivering low-carbon cement technologies for some of Europe's most ambitious infrastructure projects. While the Single Market has been fundamental to Ecocem's growth, there is still much work to do. Europe has the innovation, expertise and industrial capability to lead the global transition to low-carbon construction, but innovation must be matched by faster market access. Our message was clear: Europe needs to remove the remaining barriers that slow the deployment of proven clean technologies by: ·         Enabling European low-carbon technologies to scale in Europe first. ·         Harmonising standards faster. ·         Supporting first-of-a-kind industrial deployment. ·         Creating demand through public procurement.

    Clinker replacement is one of the most effective tools available to reduce the carbon footprint of construction today. The reason is simple, clinker is the most carbon-intensive component of cement. For every tonne of clinker produced, approximately 0.8–0.9 tonnes of CO₂ are released, with around two-thirds of these emissions coming from calcination – an unavoidable chemical reaction at the heart of clinker production. This is why Ireland's public procurement guidance identifies clinker replacement as a key carbon reduction measure, recommending a minimum 30% clinker replacement in publicly procured cement and concrete. Importantly, 30% should be viewed as a starting point, not a limit. Cements incorporating high proportions of GGBS are already readily available, enabling significant reductions in embodied carbon while continuing to deliver the performance, durability and quality that modern construction demands. With the expertise, supply chains and proven solutions already in place, the industry has the opportunity to go beyond minimum requirements and accelerate progress towards its decarbonisation goals. #LowCarbon #Cement #Construction #Decarbonisation #SustainableConstruction #NetZero #EmbodiedCarbon

  • What does it take to reduce carbon at scale in residential construction? For Ireland's largest homebuilder, it starts with challenging long-held assumptions. Through a long-standing partnership with Ecocem, Cairn Homes has embedded lower carbon concrete across its developments, while also rethinking design, material efficiency and construction practices to reduce embodied carbon without compromising performance. From increasing GGBS replacement levels in concrete to optimising structural design and reducing unnecessary excavation, the results show that meaningful carbon reductions can go hand in hand with practical, commercial outcomes. As the industry moves towards whole life carbon assessment becoming standard practice, collaboration across the value chain will be essential.   • Ecocem attended the Civil Engineering Research Association of Ireland (CERAI) Conference 2026 at Queen's University Belfast, where we were delighted to be a Platinum Sponsor. Held every two years, the conference brings together researchers, academics and industry professionals to share the latest developments in civil engineering research. One of the highlights was the concrete canoe race, showcasing the innovation, creativity and enthusiasm that continue to drive the next generation of engineers. The conference featured dedicated concrete technology sessions alongside a wide range of civil engineering topics. It was particularly encouraging to see continued research focused on reducing the carbon impact of concrete through alternative binders, circular materials and innovative approaches to construction.   • Ecocem Ireland was delighted to take part in Enterprise Ireland’s Construction Material Forum last week and to see the strong ambition and momentum driving the future of Ireland’s construction materials sector.   Our Director of Public Affairs and Sustainability, Susan McGarry joined the Industry Context & Horizon Scanning panel, highlighting the importance of continued collaboration across industry, government, and stakeholders to unlock significant opportunities for growth, innovation and sustainability in Ireland’s cement and concrete sectors.   It was also encouraging to hear from Peter Burke TD, Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment, on the vital role that partnerships play in achieving our shared goals for the sector.   At Ecocem, we believe collaboration is key to accelerating the transition to a more sustainable built environment.
