The Port of Dover handles around £144 billion in trade every year and is the UK’s busiest ferry port for both freight and passengers. As part of the Dover Western Docks Revival, approximately 500 precast units were manufactured over an eight-month period using Ecocem GGBS at a 36% cement replacement level. Delivering the durability required for a demanding marine environment, alongside a significant reduction in embodied carbon. Produced by Macrete Ireland Ltd and supplied to VolkerStevin, the project demonstrates proven low-carbon performance in one of the UK’s most important pieces of infrastructure. HS2 is one of Europe’s largest infrastructure projects — a 500 km railway connecting major cities across the UK. Over seven years, approximately 200,000 tonnes of Ecocem’s low-carbon cement solutions are being supplied across multiple sections of the route, helping to avoid more than 160,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions. That’s equivalent to the annual carbon absorption of more than 7 million mature trees. From major transport networks to critical infrastructure, Ecocem solutions are trusted where performance, durability and scale matter most. At Ecocem, it’s the people behind the scenes who help keep everything moving 🚛 This week, we’re shining a spotlight on James Fairclough, UK Logistics Manager, whose career in transport and haulage has led him to play a key role in supporting Ecocem’s operations across the UK and Ireland. With a background deeply rooted in the haulage industry, James studied Business & Management in Lancaster before building extensive experience across payroll, transport planning and transport management. Prior to joining Ecocem, he worked with one of our UK haulage partners, giving him a strong understanding of both the industry and our business. Today, he oversees UK and Irish transport planning and works closely with our supply chain teams to ensure deliveries run as smoothly and efficiently as possible, whether it’s a 5kg parcel or a 6,000 tonne shipment. What stands out most is his passion for continuous learning and the role Ecocem is playing in decarbonising the cement industry: “I enjoy everybody’s passion to the end goal of decarbonising the cement industry through use of alternative products and look forward to them reaching the shorelines of the UK and Ireland soon.” Outside of work, James is a lifelong cricket enthusiast, having been involved with his local club since the age of 8. Ecocem and Tata Steel IJmuiden have signed an MoU to advance the use of next-generation steelmaking slags in low-carbon cement and concrete. This collaboration will explore the use of Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) slag as a new Supplementary Cementitious Material (SCM), alongside the continued development of Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) slag. By replacing clinker — the most carbon-intensive ingredient in cement — with alternative materials such as slag, the cement industry can significantly cut CO₂ emissions while giving industrial by-products a more valuable and circular use. Yesterday, we attended the Institute of Concrete Technology Convention in the Bath Hotel. This year’s programme brought together speakers looking at how digital innovation, data science, sensors, predictive quality control, EPDs, AI and human creativity are shaping the future of concrete. It is encouraging to see strong momentum around low-carbon concrete. Last week, Mark Till and John Reddy MICT attended an ACDG workshop. Kilnbridge have begun construction on three prototypes, with ACT concrete being one of three mixes being poured on site for real-world testing and validation.   The ACDG initiative, led by Derwent London, is focused on bridging the gap between low-carbon concrete supply, specification needs, and market demand, helping to unlock wider adoption across the sector.   While it’s still early days, the programme is designed to generate robust, long-term performance data, giving engineers and clients the confidence to specify lower carbon solutions at scale.   Collaboration like this is critical. By working across the value chain and sharing data openly, we can reduce barriers, accelerate innovation, and move closer to meaningful decarbonisation of concrete.   Looking forward to sharing further updates over the coming months 🙌 #ACDG #LowCarbon #Concrete #Construction
