Founded in 2017, XMachines is a deep-tech startup, building modular, AI-powered robots designed to automate multiple farming operations while making mechanisation accessible and cost-effective for small and mid-sized farmers. While studying Mechatronics in Hong Kong, founder Trivikram Kumar came across reports of farmer suicides in India on Google. Coming from a farming background, he began exploring the root causes and realised the problem was deeper than just finances. Farmers were struggling with high labour costs, limited access to machines, and heavy dependence on chemicals. “More than the market opportunity, I wanted to do something meaningful in this space. I aimed to create something with real impact and value, which eventually became a large opportunity. The seed of this idea was planted in my second year of university in 2012, and I worked on the research in my spare time. This continued alongside my job between 2014 and 2016,” Trivikram Kumar tells Startup Pedia in an exclusive interview. Instead of following a conventional career path abroad, he returned to India in 2016 to build a solution from scratch. He started in a small one-bedroom flat in Hyderabad, turning it into a makeshift lab. Using his own savings of Rs 70,000, he built his first prototype and tested it on mud-filled floors to simulate real farm conditions. The first iteration of the robot was a completely hands-on, DIY effort. Trivikram designed the architecture himself and assembled locally sourced raw materials like aluminium bars, nuts, and bolts in-house. Trivikram took it directly into the fields, running live demonstrations to initiate meaningful conversations. This hands-on approach helped him move beyond theoretical assumptions and understand real-world agricultural challenges. After speaking to hundreds of farmers across Telangana, one insight became clear. The biggest gap was not awareness about chemicals, but the lack of affordable mechanisation. XMachines began focusing on building compact, multi-purpose robots that can handle tasks like sowing, weeding, spraying, and irrigation. These machines reduce labour dependency, improve efficiency, and help farmers lower overall costs. To make adoption easier, the company also introduced rental and franchise models, allowing farmers to access the technology without large upfront investments. After years of testing and iteration, the company is now seeing strong demand. Its robots are being deployed across multiple states in India and in international markets. The company reported Rs 12.10 lakh in FY23, which grew to Rs 25.42 lakh in FY24, and further to Rs 35.70 lakh in FY25. Founded in 2017, the Hyderabad-based company was born out of a simple but urgent concern of growing dependence on chemicals in farming and its long-term impact on soil, food quality, and human health. The team set out to “course correct” agriculture by reducing chemical overuse and introducing data-driven, scientific farming methods. Modern agriculture, especially in developing economies, often relies heavily on pesticides and fertilisers due to limited monitoring and a lack of precision tools. XMachines aims to address this gap using AI-powered robotics that can observe, analyse, and act at the level of individual crops. The result was healthier produce, improved soil quality, and reduced environmental harm. These machines are designed to perform multiple farm operations, including seeding, planting, weeding, and spraying, without constant human supervision. Unlike traditional farm equipment, which often treats entire fields uniformly, XMachines’ robots use sensors, computer vision, and machine learning to make real-time decisions. One of its flagship platforms, the X100 unmanned ground vehicle (UGV), is designed for rugged outdoor environments. It can carry sensors, operate across uneven terrain, and support multiple agricultural and research applications, showcasing the company’s focus on versatility. Its autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) can transport goods in industrial settings, while rugged outdoor robots are used for monitoring and maintaining solar installations.
