Due to war, famine and political reasons in the world, migration movements and refugees have beco... more Due to war, famine and political reasons in the world, migration movements and refugees have become a phenomenon affecting societies in many geographies. It is very important for the countries exposed to migration to plan the education services to be provided to refugees in order to ensure their integration into society. In this context, a significant number of refugee individuals took refuge in the country for different reasons. Increasing the quality of educational services offered to refugee individuals at school age can only be possible with the understanding by stakeholders of this new phenomenon. The present study examined Syrian refugee students' educational experiences in Eskisehir, Turkey. The ethnographic data were generated through participant observations and semi-structured interviews with 19 participants, including nine teachers, two school principals, three parents and six students at a public elementary school in a low-income neighborhood in Eskisehir. Five themes emerged through induction analyses. The findings revealed the behavioral, social and academic problems that Syrian refugee students experienced. Teachers and school administrators described the home address-based school enrollment system as an obstacle for refugee youth to study with their non-refugee peers. This policy decreased the quality of education as it increased the density of refugee students at schools. Participants' suggestions for refugee education included exclusively providing Turkish language courses to newly arrived students, providing psychological support for traumatic stress related to war and immigration, supporting teachers with appropriate teaching materials and professional development opportunities for refugee education, and establishing active family-school partnerships.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the perspectives of Turkish mothers of their chil... more The purpose of the present study was to examine the perspectives of Turkish mothers of their children with developmental disabilities A descriptive study was conducted via collecting data using semi-structured interviews. 39 mothers of children with developmental disabilities who were enrolled in a university unit. The data analysis has shown that mothers of children with developmental disabilities face many difficulties and changes in their daily family lives after the birth of their child with developmental disabilities. The results were discussed with the reference to other related studies. Parents, in general, have the responsibility of preparing an appropriate environment of love, care, and meeting the needs of their children who follow a normal pattern of development. The important issue of special education services is the special education teacher who have been ... more The important issue of special education services is the special education teacher who have been trained on instruction strategies for children with special needs. Special education teachers have been trained in short term in-service education programs and certificate programs in Turkey until 1983, after 1983 special education teachers are being trained by the universities in the undergraduate programs. There are ten undergraduate programs on special education in the universities for different special education categories in Turkey. The programs consist of 143-144 credit hours of courses offered in eight semesters. A minor program is also included in these programs. However, universities have master and doctorate programs on special education for professionals who have graduated teacher training program on special education and related with special education support programs.
