School counselors represent an integral part of a quality educational system designed to meet the... more School counselors represent an integral part of a quality educational system designed to meet the personal, social, academic, and career development needs of today's students (ASCA Ethical Standards). With increased attention on the achievement gap and the social experiences of Black male students, the need for more Black male school counselors is paramount. This research aim to examine the shortage of Black male school counselor and the explore strategies for recruitment, training, and retention. A narrative inquiry will be utilized to examine the experiences of Black male school counselors in a southeastern school system. Further exploration of the literature on the shortage of males in the counseling profession, Black males students in our schools, and the shortage of Black male school counselors will be examined. The literature on narrative tradition will also be explored as an effective inquiry approach for extracting the experiences of Black male school counselors. Finally, emerging themes from the narratives of participants will aid in the growing call for more Black male school counselors, and the development of effective recruitment, training, and retention strategies for counselor education programs, school systems, and professional counselor associations.
