Basically, two or more protein sequences are compared to evaluate their similarity and to identify conserved regions. This work reports a methodology for parallel processing of a multiple sequence alignment algorithm (ClustalW) in an environment of networked computers. A detailed description of the modules that compose the distributed system is provided, giving special attention to the way a dynamic programming algorithm is run in multilevel parallelism. Extensive experiments were done to evaluate performance and scalability of the reported method. Results suggest that the proposed method is very promising for large-scale multiple protein sequence alignment.

Traditional techniques based on variables decoupling have limitations that encourage the use of Evolutionary Computation (EC) methods. This work compares the performance of PID controllers tuned using Genetic Algorithms (GA) and Particle Swarm (PSO) with other related works in the literature. A classical model of two inputs and two outputs is used for simulation and comparison. The simulation results using EC methods, especially the PSO-based, approach showed a better performance than other relevant works described in literature.

There are currently various techniques that have been developed to try to solve this problem efficiently. In this article, we present a solution to this problem

However, the need for specific and very technical development language has not stimulate its broad use. As an alternative, there are High-level Synthesis Languages (HSL), which allow less complicated FPGA use. However, they do not tend to take full advantage of the FPGA technology. Therefore, another alternative was developed, based on the Notification Oriented Paradigm (NOP), called NOP for Digital Hardware (NOP-DH). NOP allows development in high level with its rule-oriented language called NOPL. Its entity decoupling, parallelism, and redundancy avoidance are useful for best performance. In turn, the NOP-DH brings NOP for the FPGA context with the benefits observed in software but enhanced by hardware nature. This paper reviews the NOPL for NOP-DH (NOPL-DH) that aims high level programming for FPGA. The paper proposes the NOPL-DH test by independent developers, by develop...

The underlying rationale for such an architecture is that each agent (load event detection, feature extraction, and classification) outperforms others of the same type in particular scenarios; hence, by combining the expertise of these agents, the system presents an improved performance. Known NILM algorithms, as well as new algorithms, proposed by the authors, were individually evaluated and compared. The proposed architecture considers a NILM system composed of Load Monitoring Modules (LMM) that report to a Center of Operations, required in larger facilities. For the purposed of evaluating and comparing performance, five load event detect agents, five feature extraction agents, and five classification agents were studied so that the best combinations of agents could be implemented in LMMs. To evaluate the proposed system, the COOLL and the LIT-Dataset were used. Performance i...

A Fast Simulator in FPGA for LUT-Based Combinational Logic Circuits of Arbitrary Topology for Evolutionary Algorithms
Journal of Circuits, Systems and Computers, 2016
Current works on generation of combinational logic circuits (CLC) using evolutionary algorithms (... more Current works on generation of combinational logic circuits (CLC) using evolutionary algorithms (EA) propose solutions using field-programmable gate array (FPGA) to accelerate the process of combinational circuit simulation, a step needed in order to evaluate the level of correctness of each individual circuit. However, the current works fail to separate the two distinct problems: the EA and the circuit simulator. The insistence of treating both problem as a single one results in works that fail to address either properly, restricting solutions to simple circuits and to topologically restrictive circuit simulators, while providing very limited data on the results. In this work, we address the circuit simulator problem exclusively, where we propose an architecture for fast simulation of n-LUT CLC of arbitrary topology. The proposed architecture is modular and makes no assumptions on the specific EA to be used with. We provide detailed performance results for varying circuit dimension...
