I worked as an archaeologist with Suffolk County Council for many years, specialising in prehistory and historic landscape studies. I have written and lectured widely on the archaeology, history, landscape, buildings and gardens of Suffolk and East Anglia. I am a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, a Vice-President and a past chairman of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History, a former chairman of the Suffolk Gardens Trust, a committee member of the Suffolk Historic Buildings Group, and archaeological advisor to the Diocesan Advisory Committee for the Care of Churches of the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich.

Book abstract: The foundations at Wingfield were established by Sir John de Wingfield, a veteran ... more Book abstract: The foundations at Wingfield were established by Sir John de Wingfield, a veteran of the battles of Crécy and Poitiers, and a very able administrator in the service of Edward the Black Prince. The building of a chantry college, new church and a battlemented castle was a serious bid for power and reputation, intended to present a coherent statement of the family’s status and prestige in a society that placed a lot of emphasis on public display, bloodlines, personal loyalty and piety. Such displays were essential to Sir JohnWingfield’s de la Pole descendants. In five generations the family went from being merchants in Hull to making viable bids for the throne of England. No other family of that period rose so fast and became so powerful, even arranging the marriages of kings and queens.

The 650th anniversary of the foundation of Wingfield College was the occasion for a special two-day symposium in 2012 marking the culmination of a 3-year UEA-funded research project into the college and castle. This book is the result of the papers delivered at the symposium. They examine many topics which have hitherto been neglected, such as the historic landscape of Wingfield, the archaeology of the castle, the complex history of the college's architecture, and a detailed study of the monuments in the church. The latest techniques are used to reconstruct the college and castle, with a DVD to demonstrate these. And the context of the family and its fortunes are explored in chapters on the place of the de la Poles in 15th-century history, as soldiers, administrators and potential claimants to the throne.

This report contains the findings of an English Heritage-sponsored investigation into the nature,... more This report contains the findings of an English Heritage-sponsored investigation into the nature, date and working of the historic field systems of ‘greater East Anglia’ – Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire – with an emphasis on the region’s ‘ancient countryside’. Twelve detailed case studies are presented, together with commentaries on the evidence for prehistoric and Roman field systems, including the claims for the existence of large Iron Age co-axial systems; on the terminology of medieval farming; on why there is so little evidence for ridge-and-furrow in the region; on different types of common fields and their varying distributions and contrasts with lands held in severalty; and on the management of field boundaries. An unexpected discovery of the project was the identification of a significant cultural boundary running through Suffolk that has been termed ‘the Gipping Divide’. The possible reasons for this division of the region into southern and northern components are discussed and a case is made for a connection with the upheavals caused by the Viking interventions of the 9th/10th centuries.
