The species belongs to L. sect. Cicercula. It was collected in 1998 from Erikli village nearby Aegean Sea in the province of Edirne, European Turkey. Morphological description of the species, chromosome number, 2n = 14, and karyotype characteristics are provided. Photos of the species and closely related taxa are presented as well as illustrations of the morphological characters and karyotype.

Bernh. subsp. niger, L. palustris L. subsp. palustris, L. tuberosus L., L. sphaericus Retz., L. setifolius L., L. clymenum L., L. nissolia L., L. aphaca L. var. aphaca, L. aphaca var. affinis (Guss.) Arc, L. aphaca var. bifilorus Post were examined for pollen morphology. Preparations were made using non-acetolysed and Erdtman methods. The shapes, apertureties, structures and sculptures of pollen were observed by using light microscope (LM). The pollen grains were 3-zonocolporate, of spheroidal-subprolate-prolate types (P/E=1.0281.573), medium to large in size. Equatorial view; elliptical-obtuse-convex, polar view; circular to triangular-obtuse-convex. The smallest pollen grains belong to L. nissolia (P=32.791/E=24.747 in non-acetolysed, P=40.508/E=28.444 in Erdtman) and the longest to L. clymenum (P=52.418/E=35.815 in non-acetolysed, P=58.604/E=46.332 in Erdtman) taxa. Endemic L. atropatanus (Flora Azerbaijna 5: t 50, 1954) and L. nivalis Hand.-Mazz. identifi ed in... more Endemic L. atropatanus (Flora Azerbaijna 5: t 50, 1954) and L. nivalis Hand.-Mazz. identifi ed in Nakhichevan, Southern Transcaucasia, are very similar to each other; they are even thought to be synonyms (Davis, 1970). It was collected from Van Province in 2008. L. atropatanus is diff erent from L. nivalis mainly in its dense adpressed indumentum. First attempts were made to identify the collected samples using Flora of Turkey (Davis, 1970; Davis et al., 1988; Gunes & Ozhatay, 2000). According to the identifi cation based on the Flora of Russia (Komarov, 1948), it was concluded that it is L. atropatanus, recorded for the fl ora of Turkey for the fi rst time. It was determined during the project studies that L. nivalis subsp. sahinii cannot be a new subspecies. New records and new taxa of articles have increased with revision studies recently (Aytac & Duman, 2010; Kursat et al., 2011, Ozhatay et al., 2011).

L. odoratus (Sweet pea) was used as a hedge plant in the palace gardens of the Ottoman Empire under the name “Nazende”. This plant, whose homeland is Sicily, is now grown as an ornamental plant in Europe and many countries. Naturally grown in Turkey these species L. atropotanus, L. belinensis, L. boissieri, L. chrysanthus, L. cilicicus, L. czeczottianus, L. grandiflorus, L. laxiflorus, L. nivalis, L. roseus, L. rotundifolius, L. satdaghensis, L. stenophyllus, L. sylvestris, L. trachycarpus, L. tuberosus, L. undulatus, L. variabilis can be considered as ornamental plants.

Cytotoxic Activities of Certain Medicinal Plants on Different Cancer Cell Lines

Objectives: In recent years, the use of plants for the prevention and treatment of cancer is gain... more Objectives: In recent years, the use of plants for the prevention and treatment of cancer is gaining more attention due to their diverse range of phytochemical constituents and fewer adverse effects. In this study, four medicinal plant species from the Kars province of Turkey were investigated for their cytotoxic potential against six different cancer cell lines and one normal cell line. Materials and Methods: MTT [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-dipenyltetrazolium bromide] assay was performed to assess cytotoxic activity and apoptotic effect was determined using flow cytometry and caspase-3 analyses. Results: Significant cytotoxicity (≥70%) was observed with the leaf extract of Artemisia absinthium on A-549, CCC-221, K-562, MCF-7, PC-3 cells, whereas seed extracts caused significant cytotoxicity (≥70%) on CCC-221, K-562, MCF-7, PC-3 cells. Selective cytotoxicity was obtained with leaf extract on A-549 and K-562 cells; and with seed extract on K-562, MCF-7 and PC-3 cells compared with normal Beas-2B cells. The levels of cytotoxicity for both extracts were time- and dose-dependent at lower concentrations. Moreover, selective cytotoxicity (78%) was detected on A-549 cells with the seed extract of Plantago major. Cytotoxicity of extracts from Hyoscyamus niger and Amaranthus retrosa ranged between 10% and 30%. Conclusion: A. absinthium extracts and P. major seed extract have potential for development as therapeutic agents for cytotoxicity on certain cancer cells following further investigation.
