But today, after thirty years from the collapse of dictatorship, there are signs of political pathogenicity, which are reflected in the political life of the country (see scandals, economic crisis) and the collective consciousness of the people (electoral abstention, political apathy, disdain the political system and policies). In our research we attempt to record the attitudes and beliefs of students in Greek universities towards politics, politicians and democracy as expressed in the Greek political system. We used a questionnaire, which includes a specially weighted scale of attitudes (Cronbach's alpha = 0,872), questions recorded demographic characteristics of the sample as well as variables related to political culture. The results showed negative at...

Since the outburst of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, their attention has been mostly paid to the protection and the health situation of citizens worldwide. Although millions of refugees are also exposed to a new risk with their vulnerable position being deteriorated, the refugee issue in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic seems to have been downgraded. In this regard, the current article explores to what extent the refugee issue was salient in the Greek, German, and British press during the pandemic. At the same time, it looks at how the media outlets in all three countries addressed it, focusing on the key topics reported and the interpretive schemata of the pertinent coverage. We use a qualitative content analysis, examining a sample of newspaper articles that were published between 1 January 2021 an...

The 2014 Election campaigns worth specific attention, as for the first time, there was a direct correlation between the vote of the EU's citizens and the election of the European Commission President. In view of this and expanding the argument of "Americanization" this study suggests that the EPP and the PES 2014 election campaigns tend to resemble the United States' Presidential campaigns.

All the continuous changes seem not to be characterized by a clearly defined operational aim and rational continuity. Currently, educators, pupils, university students, parents, politicians and citizens criticize various structural and functional aspects of the Greek educational system. The main scope of this piece of research is recording and analyzing the problems of the Greek educational system according to the opinions of Greek undergraduate students. We asked about 400 undergraduate students for written answers to the following question: “According to your opinion which are the main problems of the Greek educational system? " The written answers have been analyzed according to the methodological standards of the classical thematic content analysis. 1468 statements have been summarized and taxonomized in ten main thematic categories. The Cohen test has showed a hi...

Football Stickers and Slogans as Creators of 'Special' Identities. The case of Aris FC Thessaloniki

In this research, we focus on fan slogans and fan stickers, as linguistic and iconic messages, produced in 2010 by young fans belonging to fan clubs of Aris FC Thessaloniki. We think of social identity as a " production " , which is never complete, is always in process and holds a prominent place (Hart, 2009). Especially in the framework of modernity, the transition from family and community life to the real urban sphere widens the gap between different generations' values and attitudes. At the same time, this situation provides a " fruitful field " for anomie and deviancy amplification (Orru,1983). A socio–semiotic analysis (Barthes, 1977; Kress, et al 1996; Lagopoulos & Boklund–Lagopoulou,1992; Randviir & Cobley 2010) is app...

The Greek crisis strikes as an ideal opportunity to start this debate. The phenomenal rise of the middle class in Greece over the last four decades has shaped a very problematic framework for a deep and rational analysis of social classes in contemporary Greek society. The policy that had enabled public servants and small businessmen to have access to social goodsthat until a few years ago was exclusive privilege of the upper class-has changed the dominant model of interpretation of social stratification and hierarchy in modern Greek society. This study by using a mixed questionnaire (Likert scale and Content Analysis of the written texts) investigates the class stereotypes and the class consciousness of the Greek youth, while trying to clarify the facts of class stratification in the country in the midst of an unprecedented economic, social and political crisis.
