Some accounts dated his martyrdom to the firstcentury persecu6ons under Domi6an and incorrectly iden6fied him with Dionysios the Areopagite the disciple of Paul. St Denis is a so-called cephalophoric saint, with a popular story that, a@er his decapita6on, he picked up his head and walked several miles while preaching a sermon on repentance. He is the patron saint of France and Paris. St-Denis, Main Entrance. The architectural and iconographic programs are the work of Suger, as is the inscription at the top of the two doors.
