This process involves both the detection of physical energy (such as light, sound waves, or chemical molecules) and its transformation into electrical signals that the nervous system can interpret (OpenStax, 2020). Traditionally, sensation has been described through the five classical senses: vision, audition, touch, taste, and olfaction. These sensory systems primarily gather information from the external environment and are therefore categorized as exteroceptive senses.
