This research explores the phenomena of code mixing and code switching among students at Taraba State University. The study aims to understand the reasons behind these practices, their frequency, and their impact on communication and academic performance. Data were collected through questionnaires and interviews with 200 students, revealing significant insights into how and why students switch between languages in various contexts. The findings indicate that code mixing and code switching are prevalent practices, influenced by factors such as linguistic proficiency, social identity, and context. While these practices can enhance communication and learning, they also pose challenges, particularly in academic settings. The study recommends developing flexible language policies that accommodate multilingualism, incorporating code switching and mixing into teaching strategies, and providing language proficiency support to address these challenges and enhance educational outcomes.

This study investigates the attitudes of primary school pupils towards learning English in Ardoko... more This study investigates the attitudes of primary school pupils towards learning English in Ardokola Local Government Area (LGA), Taraba State, Nigeria, and explores the key factors that influence these attitudes. Additionally, it examines the impact of these attitudes on pupils' academic performance in English language subjects and evaluates the role of teachers and the educational environment in shaping these attitudes. A descriptive survey design was adopted, with data collected from a sample of 100 pupils across public and private primary schools. Structured questionnaires were used to gather data on demographic characteristics, attitudes towards English learning, influential factors, and perceived academic outcomes. The findings reveal that while pupils generally hold positive attitudes toward learning English, factors such as lack of confidence, insufficient parental encouragement, and an unsupportive classroom environment adversely affect their engagement and performance. The study also shows that intrinsic motivation and supportive teacher-student relationships are positively correlated with improved academic performance. Key influences include cultural background, parental support, access to learning resources, and peer interactions. The study concludes that enhancing English learning outcomes requires fostering a more engaging and supportive educational environment, along with encouraging parental involvement and providing better access to resources. Recommendations include implementing interactive teaching methods, increasing access to digital resources, and promoting intrinsic motivation among pupils. These strategies could help improve attitudes toward English learning, thereby enhancing academic performance. Future research is suggested to explore the long-term effects of these factors and interventions on language learning outcomes.

This critical review examines the core principles, dynamics, and functions of FST, highlighting its relevance to intervention strategies. The theory emphasizes the interconnectedness of family members and the importance of systemic patterns in influencing individual behaviors and overall family functioning. Despite its strengths, FST faces limitations such as cultural sensitivity issues and resistance to change.
The review explores various intervention strategies grounded in FST, including genograms, systemic questioning, differentiation of self, and strategic family therapy, noting their effectiveness in fostering healthier family relationships. Challenges in implementing these interventions, such as resistance, cultural considerations, and resource constraints, are also discussed. Recommendations for enhancing the application of FST include comprehensive training, cultural competence, interdisciplinary collaboration, flexibility in approach, focus on strengths and resilience, ongoing research, and increased accessibility and outreach.
