In this paper, the conceptual design and operational principle of a novel TPR neutron spectromete... more In this paper, the conceptual design and operational principle of a novel TPR neutron spectrometer based on GEM, intended for future spectrometry applications dedicated to fusion plasmas, is described. A feasibility study based on theoretical modelling and computer simulations of a possible detector configuration prototype is presented. In particular, we discuss the results of optimizing the detector geometry, estimating its overall performance, and the expected quality of energy resolution.

Alpha particles subsequently transmit their energy to deuterium or tritium ions and helium ash, and in this way heat up the plasma. Some alpha particles escape from the core due to enhanced radial transport caused by plasma instabilities or a toroidal field ripple. They are called the “escaping alpha particles” or the “lost alpha particles”. The detection of “lost alpha particles” is very important, as they might be the source of information on the energy balance in tokamak [3, 7]. However, the flux of neutrons and alpha particles in future tokamaks is estimated to be very large, which means that the detection process would have to be carried out in a harsh environment, so damage resistant detectors would be required. Experimental and Monte Carlo Investigations of BCF-12 Small‐Area Plastic Scintillation Detectors for Neutron Pinhole Camera

Plastic organic scintillators such as the blue-emitting BCF-12 are versatile and inexpensive tool... more Plastic organic scintillators such as the blue-emitting BCF-12 are versatile and inexpensive tools. Recently, BCF-12 scintillators have been foreseen for investigation of the spatial distribution of neutrons emitted from dense magnetized plasma. For this purpose, small-area (5 mm × 5 mm) detectors based on BCF-12 scintillation rods and Hamamatsu photomultiplier tubes were designed and constructed at the Institute of Nuclear Physics. They will be located inside the neutron pinhole camera of the PF-24 plasma focus device. Two different geometrical layouts and approaches to the construction of the scintillation element were tested. The aim of this work was to determine the efficiency of the detectors. For this purpose, the experimental investigations using a neutron generator and a Pu-Be source were combined with Monte Carlo computations using the Geant4 code.

The dependence of the thermal neutron diffusion parameters on the water content w in quartz, SiO2... more The dependence of the thermal neutron diffusion parameters on the water content w in quartz, SiO2, has been studied by means of Monte Carlo simulations of the pulsed neutron experiments for a number of series of samples. The density-removed diffusion cooling coefficient C M varies hyperbolically between 39 400 000 and 4940 cm 4 s –1 (g/cm 3 ) 3 at the water content in the full range 0 ≤ w ≤.1. The obtained function C M (w) is compared with the analogous dependence for moisturized dolomite.

Diamond Detector for a Spectrometric Measurement of “ Lost Alpha Particles ”

A synthetic high purity CVD monocrystalline diamond detector has been tested in aspect of measure... more A synthetic high purity CVD monocrystalline diamond detector has been tested in aspect of measurement of the escaping alpha particles from nuclear reactions appear in such machines like tokamak or stellarator. This research confirms potential application of the diamond detectors for spectrometric diagnostic of the lost alphas in future thermonuclear reactors. Spectrometric properties of the CVD diamond detector of the 50 μm thickness has been tested using a triple alpha particle isotopic source AMR33 and a van de Graaff accelerator which produced a well defined monoenergetic alpha beams, changing between 0.5 and 2 MeV. We also test behavior of the diamond detector in a 14 MeV neutron generator which is a source of α particles from the D-T reaction.

The pulsed neutron experiment (the variable geometric buckling experiment) in spherical geometry ... more The pulsed neutron experiment (the variable geometric buckling experiment) in spherical geometry has been simulated using the MCNP code. The time decay of the thermal neutron flux has been observed as a function of the sample size. The thermal neutron diffusion cooling coefficient C with the correction F has been determined for three basic rock minerals at the given specific densities ρ: Quartz (SiO2, ρ = 2.65 g/cm): C = 2 117 000 cms, F = 7 060 000 cms Calcite (CaCO3, ρ = 2.71 g/cm): C = 1 341 000 cms, F = 3 610 000 cms Dolomite (CaMg(CO3)2, ρ = 2.87 g/cm): C = 778 000 cms, F = 1 380 000 cms. The corresponding density-removed parameters have been also obtained.
