The objective of this research was to explore the linguistic performance of two humanoids: Sophia... more The objective of this research was to explore the linguistic performance of two humanoids: Sophia and Ameca in conversation during humanoid-human interaction in two different interviews. Gricean Cooperative Principles as theoretical framework directed the study to identify the performance of humanoids and their adherence and flouting of the maxim of quality, quantity, manner, and relevance. Eight dialogues are taken to study the conversational implicature with four dialogues for each humanoid. By analyzing AIdriven conversational models, this paper examines how logic-based programming aligns with or deviates from human pragmatic norms and investigates whether AI's linguistic responses exhibit pragmatic competence or merely mimic cooperative communication through statistical probabilities. The findings contribute to the discourse on human-AI interaction, highlighting the potential and limitations of artificial conversational agents in achieving truly cooperative communication. The study stresses the need for advancing AI pragmatics to foster natural and contextually appropriate dialogue between humans and humanoid entities.

Perceptions about Foreignization and Domestication: A Case Study of Undergraduate Students at NUML, Islamabad

The following study aims to find out the attitudes of the undergraduate students of 8th semester,... more The following study aims to find out the attitudes of the undergraduate students of 8th semester, studying at National University of Modern Languages, Islamabad, about the two techniques of translation, foreignization and domestication. The concept of foreignization and domestication was put forwarded by an American translation theorist, Lawrence Venuti, in 1995 in his work A Translator's Invisibility. Two translated paragraphs of Ismat Chughtai's short story, Do Hath, are given to the students. One is written using domestication, and the other is written leaving imprints of the source culture. The research is exploratory as interviews are conducted to corroborate the study. For analysis of interviews, Kathy Charmaz's model of interview analysis is used. The model was given in 2012 in Charmaz's book about the Grounded Theory. It is found that the students of the English Department of NUML, Islamabad, who have studied Translation Studies as a subject in their previous semester (7th semester), asserts that the technique of foreignization should be prioritized while translating texts from Urdu to English.

The paper aims to analyse the movie Murder on the Orient Express using Roland Barthes' codes of n... more The paper aims to analyse the movie Murder on the Orient Express using Roland Barthes' codes of narrative analysis. The work under-discussion is an adaptation of the novel of same name written by Agatha Christie in 1934. There is little work done on the visual literature from the perspective of this theory. The authors use the five codes in an attempt to uncover and decrypt the meaning of the movie's plot. The theory for this research is Structuralism and the theoretical framework is that of Roland Barthes'. Additionally, the data for analysis i.e. dialogues are taken from the movie and rest of the references are taken from different sources across the internet. The first two codes of the theory can be used to decipher the major events and enigmas of the plot. The rest of the three are used to point out the antithetic, cultural and beyond surface meanings. The writer finds out that the plot is scriptible which means it is not easily understandable to the viewer at first glance. One has to contemplate to get a better understanding of the story.

ORIGIN ERASED: AN EXPLORATION OF ANTHROPOCENTRICITY AND AMBIVALENCE IN THE DISCOURSE OF PAKISTANI LEATHER-SELLING BRANDS

The study aims to unveil the anthropocentricity and ambivalence present in the discourse of leath... more The study aims to unveil the anthropocentricity and ambivalence present in the discourse of leather-selling brands. It is conducted with special reference to Pakistani-origin brands. Two well-reputed brands of Pakistan are chosen as samples for conduction of the study. These two brands are: Jafferjees, one of the oldest brands of Pakistan established back in 1880 in Quetta, then British India; and, Kordovan Leather is a brand with an experience of almost 130 years in the leather industry. The latter brand brought the concept of vegan leather for the first time in Pakistan in 2020. A tailored framework made from amalgam of elements from Kress and Leeuwen's multimodality theory and Stibbe's concept of erasure is applied to direct the study. The study manifested that there is a trend of catchy phrases which implicitly advocates for anthropocentric tendencies in the online realm. Additionally, these tendencies are achieved not only through linear discourse, but ambivalence is there in these discourses to account for a more captivating display of the products to enhance consumerism of the leather products.

Ghani Khan, also known as Lewanai Phalsafi (The Lunatic Philosopher), is a towering literary figure in Pashto literature. Ghani Khan has extensively written in the Pashto language. He is commonly known for his poetry and art. The author amalgamated the concept of Feminism given by the French writer and philosopher, Simone de Beauvoir, and that of Ghani Khan’s view about the attitudes of the male-dominated society towards the women. Ghani Khan strived to unveil the atrocities of the tribal system and the usurpation of women's rights at the hands of the Pashtoon male-dominant society. In his short story, which has been taken for analysis, PRIEST MAGIC AND CHARMS LTD., he manifests the horrible subjugation of the women of the typical Pashtoon society. Ghani Khan remained a staunch proponent of women’s rights up until he died in 1996. He criticized the stereotypical theological exploitation of illiterate people as well. The researchers used a qualitative method to conduct this research and employed an archival data collection approach to contribute to the body of knowledge.
