The new PGAA installation at the FRM II

At the new research reactor FRM II in Garching near Munich the beam guide with the highest cold n... more At the new research reactor FRM II in Garching near Munich the beam guide with the highest cold neutron flux is dedicated to Prompt Gamma-ray Activation Analysis (PGAA) and related neutron capture experiments. We have designed a partially ballistic form of the neutron guide with the aim of concentrating the cold neutrons at the target position of the PGAA experiment. The cold neutron flux with a mean energy of only 1.83 meV was measured about 10.5 cm far from the second exit window and reached intensity of 1.7×1010 n/cm2 s at a 2 mm×2 mm gold foil. The PGAA installation is now prepared for three different kinds of measurements-standard PGAA, Neutron Tomography of small samples and position sensitive PGAA, or PGAI for short. We have also measured gammagamma coincidences in 77Ge. In this paper, we want to introduce the PGAA facility, show the diversity of the recently performed experiments and discuss further possibilities.

The selective delivery of (10)B into the tumor tissue remains to be further improved for successf... more The selective delivery of (10)B into the tumor tissue remains to be further improved for successful and reliable Boron Neutron Capture Therapy applications. Magnetic Drug Targeting using intraarterially administered superparamagnetic nanoparticles and external magnetic fields already exhibited convincing results in terms of highly efficient and selective drug deposition. Using the same technique for the targeted (10)B delivery is a promising new approach. Here, systematic irradiation experiments of phantom cubes containing different concentrations of boron and nanoparticles as well as varying three-dimensional arrangements have been performed.

The instrument was originally built and operating at the spallation source at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland. After a careful re-design in 2004-2006, the new PGAA instrument was ready for operation at FRM II.

The aim of the EU FP6-funded ANCIENT CHARM project has been the development of new, and the integ... more The aim of the EU FP6-funded ANCIENT CHARM project has been the development of new, and the integration of existing element-sensitive imaging methods utilizing neutrons. We present here the methodology and the first implementation of 3D elemental mapping at the Prompt Gamma Activation 10 Analysis instrument of the research reactor FRM II, in order to determine spatially-resolved elemental abundances in samples. After the design, optimization, and characterization of the new setup, measurements were successfully completed on archaeological objects of historical significance from the collection of the Hungarian National Museum.

We present a fast and effective wet-chemistry method, used to obtain the pure alpha-emitter 211 A... more We present a fast and effective wet-chemistry method, used to obtain the pure alpha-emitter 211 At/ 211g Po (T 1/2 = 7.214 h/516 ms), produced by 209 Bi(α,2n) reaction in NCA form. It is a selective radiochemical separation of the At radionuclides from the target and the impurities, characterized by a radionuclidic purity close to 100%, based on the dissolution and the dilution of the irradiated target in acidic medium, on the extraction with DIPE, followed by the back-extraction with NaOH. As a result, we obtain a yield greater than 90-97% in a range from 0.75M to 2.00M.
