Expert system for voltage dip classification and analysis

This paper presents an expert system that is able to classify different types of voltage dips according to the underlying causes (i.e. events) and offer useful information in temls of power quality. The expert system uses the voltage waveforms and distinguishes the different types of voltage dips (fault-induced, transformer saturation, induction motor starting), explains the changes in the voltage dip magnitude (change in the system, chm,ge in the fault type, transformer saturation, motor load influence) and separates interruptions into non-fault and faultindu[;ed. A method is proposed for event-based classification, where a segmentation algorithm is first applied to divide waveforms into several possible events. Kalman filtering is employed to model the waveforms and the residuats of the model are used for segmentation. The expert system is tested using real measurements and the results show that the syste]menables fast and accurate anatysis of data from power qurdity monitors.

ABSTRACT This paper presents the results of a set of measurements to study changes in harmonic em... more ABSTRACT This paper presents the results of a set of measurements to study changes in harmonic emission from domestic equipment due to the introduction of energy-efficient lamps. During this study measurements have been performed of the emission from different combinations of domestic devices in combination with different kind of lamps. Those results are then compared with standards, with a mathematical aggregation model and with results from field experiments in order to give recommendations to different stakeholders. The measurements clearly show that the total emission depends on the lamps that are connected as a background. It is however not possible to draw the general conclusion that the introduction of CFLs and LED lamps will result in an increase or decrease of emission. It is also concluded in this work that the IEC aggregation model does not give useful estimations of changes in emission from domestic installations due to the introduction of CFLs and LED lamps. The measurement results further indicate that emission levels at higher frequencies might increase due to the large-scale introduction of such lamps.

Signal processing techniques are used in the recording of PQ variations as well as the analysis of events and conditions. This article creates an awareness of PQ issues in the signal processing community and provides an overview of the signal processing techniques that can be used to understand and solve the PQ problems experienced in the power systems community.

Expressions are obtained for the missing voltage during unbalanced voltage sags. These expressions are used to estimate how often a voltage sag occurs where the missing voltage exceeds the injection capability of the SSC. The method is applied to a typical Italian network configuration.

This paper contributes and provides some solutions to the following issues: 1) to introduce a new way to identify different categories of power system transients based on their underlying causes; 2) to propose a model and analysis tool for oscillatory transients, where emphasis is on finding phenomena and characteristics associated with the underlying causes of transients. A model-based approach, ESPRIT, is applied to a number of simulated voltage waveforms to extract the parameters of oscillatory transients, and the results may be used for identifying and understanding the causes of transients by correlating the major components in transients with the phenomena that may appear in different types of transients and some a priori knowledge of power system settings.
