En aquesta comunicació presentem les principals línies de recerca del Grup sobre Governament del ... more En aquesta comunicació presentem les principals línies de recerca del Grup sobre Governament del Canvi Climàtic (GGCC), el qual pertany al Grup Singular de Recerca en Sostenibilitat, Tecnologia i Humanisme (STH) de la UPC. El GGCC va ser creat l’any 2014 amb la missió d’investigar i intentar incidir en les negociacions internacionals sobre el canvi climàtic, tenint present que l’equitat i la justícia climàtica s’haurien d’imposar en la lluita contra el canvi climàtic. El GGCC està format per dos subgrups, un primer subgrup que treballa la vesant més acadèmica i científica del projecte i l’altre subgrup treballa a nivell polític i institucional. Image segmentation is defined as a partition realized to an image into homogeneous regions to mod... more Image segmentation is defined as a partition realized to an image into homogeneous regions to modify it into something that is more meaningful and softer to examine. Although several segmentation approaches have been proposed recently, in this paper, we develop a new image segmentation method based on the statistical confidence interval tool along with the well-known Otsu algorithm. According to our numerical experiments, our method has a dissimilar performance in comparison to the standard Otsu algorithm to specially process images with speckle noise perturbation. Actually, the effect of the speckle noise entropy is almost filtered out by our algorithm. Furthermore, our approach is validated by employing some image samples.

This paper presents a recent self-sampled-data control algorithm applied to nonlinear systems wit... more This paper presents a recent self-sampled-data control algorithm applied to nonlinear systems with actuator failures. Our approach uses the linear model of a given nonlinear system, and based on a granted actuator fault observer method, an asynchronous sampled-data fault compensator controller is then formulated. The proposed sampling rule is realized by using an event-detector monitoring signal invention. On this way, the sampled rate is self governed and asynchronous by nature. Hence, our contribution is twofold. Fist, a new auto-generated non-uniform sampled-data mechanism is stated. Second, we grant an event-triggered control law with actuator failure observation and compensation. Our findings are completely supported by employing Lyapunov's theory. Finally, according to our numerical experiments applied to an undamped torsional pendulum, our design is able to detect a failure in the actuator device and it can stabilize the undamped torsional pendulum system presenting better performance in comparison to its open-loop deployment.

In this paper, a model for the distribution of the Global Carbon Budget between the countries of ... more In this paper, a model for the distribution of the Global Carbon Budget between the countries of the world is presented. The model is based on the criteria of equity while also taking into account the different historical responsibilities. The Global Carbon Budget corresponds to the quantity of carbon dioxide emissions that can still be released into the atmosphere while maintaining the increase in the average earth surface temperature below 2°C, and it is therefore compatible with the long-term objective defined in the Paris Agreement. The results of applying the model are shown both for the 15 emitters that currently top the ranking for world emissions as well as for the other countries, which are grouped together in three main groups: Other African, Other Latin American and Caribbean, and the Rest of the World. Mitigation curves compatible with the carbon budget allocated to the different countries are presented. When comparing each emitter's historical emissions for the period 1971-2010 with the proposed distribution for the period 2011-2050 obtained using the model, it can be seen that developed countries must face the future with a greatly reduced carbon budget, whereas developing countries can make use of a carbon budget that is higher than their cumulative historical emissions. Finally, there is a discussion about how a model with these characteristics could be useful when implementing the Paris Agreement.

Purpose The main purpose of this paper is to introduce the concept of global carbon budget (GCB) ... more Purpose The main purpose of this paper is to introduce the concept of global carbon budget (GCB) as a key concept that should be introduced as a reference when countries formulate their mitigation contributions in the context of the Paris Agreement and in all the monitoring, reporting and verification processes that must be implemented according to the decisions of the Paris Summit. Design/methodology/approach A method based on carbon budget accounting is used to analyze the intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs) submitted by the 15 countries that currently head the ranking of global emissions. Moreover, these INDCs are analyzed and compared with each other. Sometimes, inadequate methodologies and a diverse level of ambition in the formulated targets are observed. Findings It is found that the INDCs of those 15 countries alone imply the release into the atmosphere of 84 per cent of the GCB for the period 2011-2030, and 40 per cent of the GCB available until the end of ...

The classical statistical study of the wind speed in the atmospheric surface layer is made genera... more The classical statistical study of the wind speed in the atmospheric surface layer is made generally from the analysis of the three habitual components that perform the wind data, that is, the component W-E, the component S-N and the vertical component, considering these components independent. When the goal of the study of these data is the Aeolian energy, so is when wind is studied from an energetic point of view and the squares of wind components can be considered as compositional variables. To do so, each component has to be divided by the module of the corresponding vector. In this work the theoretical analysis of the components of the wind as compositional data is presented and also the conclusions that can be obtained from the point of view of the practical applications as well as those that can be derived from the application of this technique in different conditions of weather.

Several studies have been made to design and to build Aeolian parks for power provision of small, medium or great levels of consumption. In order to determine the viability of parks’ locations, statistical studies in situ are made measuring the wind speed during long periods of time with expensive material to the approximated height of the nose of the aero generator. This paper aims to establish a mathematical relation, based on empirical data, between parameters of the Weibull distribution at different heights in the atmospheric superficial layer, to reduce the price of cost and to improve decision making.

Los grupos reducidos nos dan una posibilidad de relacion cercana al mismo tiempo que un control y conocimiento explicito del trabajo y remarca la necesidad de la asistencia continuada al pasar lista diariamente. En nuestra experiencia hemos intentado llevar a cabo unas practicas diferentes a las planteadas por los manuales, con ejercicios no realizados “expresamente” para su ejecucion con el ordenador ni de forma pautada, ejercicios libres que permitan al estudiante realizar dos tipos de aprendizajes dado que unas se realizaran de forma individual (autonomo) y otras en grupo. Analogamente tambien tendran que desarrollar la expresion escrita que le diferencie de los otros pues en los trabajos la nota vendra marcada por la memoria adjunta. Este sistema consigue que desarrollen tres de las competencias genericas propuestas por la UPC.

So, it is very important to be able to characterize the above-stated wind regime to, later, model and simulate it from the short term weather forecasting; this simulation should reproduce the best possible different episodes that characterize the wind regime in the area and verify parametric characteristics that allow defining the wind regime. Wind speed data are analysed to characterize local wind regime (wind speed distribution) and also an analysis of regional and seasonal parameters of local wind regime is done. The controller is realized in such way that when the plant output is located outside of the designed clustering set, the controller forces it to be in it. Moreover, and according to our real experiment applied to stabilize an unstable integrator plant, our controller approach design is also robust against un-vanishing perturbations and nonlinearity effects on the overall closed-loop system such as saturation, slew-rate limit, and limit bandwidth frequency operation.
