Born in Liverpool, I studied physics at Durham University, obtaining an MSci in theoretical physics in 1999 with a dissertation on quantum chaos in semiconductor structures. I earned a PhD in theoretical condensed matter physics in 2002, developing improved exchange-correlation functionals in density functional theory (DFT).

After my PhD I worked as a technical consultant for Detica (now part of BAE systems) and in 2005, I changed direction and studied philosophy at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. Here, I was confronted by a question which changed my entire life: what is life? Is it possible to fall in love with a question?

Some time later I noticed a subtle, yet deep logical structure within DNA, RNA and protein which - as far as I could tell, nobody had noticed before. I knew I had uncovered something significant: the Non-Physical Communication Architecture (NPCA).

This framework derives the universal DNA-RNA-protein triad from pure logic and provides a new definition of life: life is the embodiment of a universal communication architecture - the NPCA. This offers fresh insights into life's origin and the rarity of life in the universe, as well as other previously unsolved problems in biology, including the living status of viruses, cryptobiosis and homochirality.

The emergence of triadic, unidirectional communication in biology

All cells rely on a strikingly universal transfer of information from DNA to RNA to protein. Desp... more All cells rely on a strikingly universal transfer of information from DNA to RNA to protein. Despite decades of progress in molecular biology, there is no definitive theoretical explanation for why cells possess this particular triadic, unidirectional communication architecture. This paper presents an informational framework demonstrating that triadic, unidirectional communication is not a contingent product of chemistry, but rather emerges from communication systems subjected to two specific constraints: (1) unique modes of communication, and (2) non-identical paths of communication. To validate this approach, computer simulations were performed on initially random communication networks. The results demonstrate that, under the combined action of these constraints, triadic unidirectional communication robustly and repeatedly emerges-appearing in more than one in four simulations from a completely undirected starting topology. Strikingly, networks in which every node carries the same functional role are entirely eliminated by the constraints, suggesting that total functional homogeneity-as proposed in some interpretations of the RNA World hypothesis-is not a viable communication architecture. These findings indicate that the Central Dogma is the physical instantiation of a more general, substrate-independent law of information transfer, termed the Non-Physical Communication Architecture (NPCA). This also shifts the origin of life from a problem of chemistry, to a problem of constrained communication. Ultimately, this framework raises another tantalising consequence discussed here: the possibility of multiple independent origins of life.

Towards a universal theory of life: The Non-Physical Communication Architecture

At the core of all living cells lies DNA, RNA, and protein - a deeply conserved communication arc... more At the core of all living cells lies DNA, RNA, and protein - a deeply conserved communication architecture encompassing transcription, translation, the genetic code and the Central Dogma. No existing theory explains why this specific DNA-RNA-protein system exists or why it exhibits its particular structure. Here, communication is analysed in a substrate-independent regime, free of space, time, and matter, under logical constraints alone. A unique triadic, unidirectional architecture emerges: the Non-Physical Communication Architecture (NPCA). The NPCA maps directly to the DNA-RNA-protein system, thereby providing a unified account of the DNA-RNA-protein information flow as embodied logic rather than historical accidents of prebiotic chemistry. Life is defined as the embodied NPCA (E-NPCA) in matter. This framework resolves puzzles in viral classification, cryptobiosis and homochirality, while implying a rare, threshold origin of life with consequences for the Fermi Paradox.

Despite its centrality, this asymmetry lacks a theoretical derivation. We show that DNA, RNA and protein embody a unified set of architectural constraints on communication, derived from minimal assumptions, which we term the Non-Physical Communication Architecture (NPCA). Within this framework, communication is necessarily triadic and unidirectional, culminating in a terminal receive-only mode. The Central Dogma and the absence of reverse translation therefore follow directly from the NPCA as an architectural necessity, rather than a contingent feature of biochemistry.
