This study examines the annual procedure volume of 1000 MRI sites in 120 counties of metropolitan areas in the USA. The results indicate that socio-economic factors have statistically significant associations with the observed rate of utilisation of MRI. Policy implications are discussed.

This paper explores factors such as socio-demographics, income and wealth and e-skills that may i... more This paper explores factors such as socio-demographics, income and wealth and e-skills that may influence the adoption of the ICTs at the individual level. We examine to what extent these factors contribute to the digital divide between different social groups in Serbia. We use the panel data from the survey "ICT usage in Republic of Serbia" in 2006 and 2007, covering over 3000 individuals/households, to perform a quantitative analysis of the digital divide and ICT adoption. Based on a classification tree and a logistic regression model, a profile of the typical ICT adopter and non-adopter is identified. The empirical results show the following: (i) the digital divide between age group 55-74 and those younger that 55 slightly increased in 2007 in case of regular Internet use; (ii) at the individual level the ICT adoption (use of PC, Internet and mobile phones) in Serbia is mainly influenced by the income and wealth of an individual, its computer and Internet skills and age; (iii) this result is quite robust across the methodological approaches used; and (iv) the classification tree approach is preferable since it gives the same predictive accuracy as the logistic regression with a more parsimonious model. The policy implications of these results are discussed.

This chapter examines the influence of socio-economic factors on the employment, payroll, and num... more This chapter examines the influence of socio-economic factors on the employment, payroll, and number of enterprises of three technology sectors for counties in California. Based on correlation and regression analyses, the results reveal that factors that are important correlates of technology sectors are professional/scientific/technical services, other services, and educational services, ethnicity, and college education. As a whole, the findings emphasize the importance of the association of socio economic factors with the per capita magnitude of the technology sectors. This chapter suggests steps that can be taken by the state of California and its county and local governments to foster technology and reduce the digital divide.

This paper presents a model of governmental, investment, social, and economic factors that influe... more This paper presents a model of governmental, investment, social, and economic factors that influence technological utilization for 110 countries. Structural equation modeling is applied to conceptualize and test the model. This model uses latent and observable variables and the application tests the hypothesis that technology use can be accounted for in a multidimensional model composed of four factors: Government Support/Legal Framework/Openness, Investment in Business and Technology, Socioeconomic Level, and Technology Utilization. Findings indicate a critical pathway of influences between the factors of government support/legal framework/openness, socioeconomic level, and technology utilization. The results are important because they model complex path relationships between factors identified in the literature, but not previously available for SEM analysis. The paper suggests policy steps for national governments of developed and developing nations especially for policies stressing investment in ICT, strengthening of R&D, societal openness, a strong legal system, prioritization of ICT, and betterment of education.

The conceptual framework is based on prior research showing that these factors impact the usage of technology and vice versa. Structural equation modeling is applied to conceptualize and test the model. This model uses latent and observable variables and the application tests five hypotheses for the overall model and relationships between its factors. Data are recent and from the World Bank and World Economic Forum. The findings indicate a critical pathway of influences between the factors of government support and openness, socioeconomic level, and technology utilization. The paper suggests policy steps for national governments of developed and developing nations especially for policy clusters of government emphasis on ICT, openness, and strengthening of R&D and technology investment.
