Rolling in the deep: How values and personality traits affect individual perceptions of electoral integrity
An established literature assesses the substantial conditions for the presence of electoral integ... more An established literature assesses the substantial conditions for the presence of electoral integrity (e.g., Norris 2014); within this framework, recent research focuses on how individual perceive the integrity of elections, that is, if and how citizens perceive that elections in their country are "free and fair" and globally lacking manipulations and malpractices (e.g., Aarts and Thomassen 2008; Birch 2008, 2010). This contribution investigates the deep individual underpinnings of those perceptions. More specifically, our aim is to uncover how values (Schwartz 1992) and the Big Five personality traits (John et al. 1991, 2008) affect how citizens perceive the conduct of elections, and their integrity, in their country. Un nombre croissant de travaux s’interesse a la relation entre les traits de personnalite et vale... more Un nombre croissant de travaux s’interesse a la relation entre les traits de personnalite et valeurs des citoyens et leur comportement dans les spheres sociales et politiques. Neanmoins, l’engagement associatif en tant que forme particuliere de participation citoyenne n’a recu que peu d’attention a cet egard, et les etudes incluant a la fois les traits de personnalite et les valeurs des individus comme predicteurs de ce type d’engagement sont particulierement rares. Cette these se propose de combler cette lacune en examinant les effets de cinq traits centraux de la personnalite (les « Big Five » ; Goldberg 1981) et de quatre types de valeurs fondamentales (Schwartz 1992) sur l’engagement dans differents types d’organisations (e.g. clubs de loisirs, associations de quartier, organisations caritatives, organisations de mouvements sociaux, partis politiques).
