Preventive maintenance of sensors assures their correct operation for a certain period of time, b... more Preventive maintenance of sensors assures their correct operation for a certain period of time, but do not guarantee that they remain faultless for other periods, besides being occasionally unnecessary. In industrial plants the analysis of signals from sensors that monitor a plant is a difficult task due to the high-dimensionality of data. Therefore an on-line strategy for monitoring and correcting multiple sensors is required. This work proposes the use of Auto-Associative Neural Networks with a Modified Robust Training and the Sequential Probability Ratio Test (SPRT) in an on-line monitoring system for self-correction and anomalies detection in the measurements generated by a large number of sensors. Unlike existing models, the proposed system aims at using only one AANN for each group of sensors to reconstruct signals from faulty sensors. The model is evaluated with a database containing measurements of industrial sensors that control and carry out the monitoring of an internal combustion engine installed in a mining truck. The result shows the ability of the proposed model to map and correct signals, with a low error, from faulty sensors.

This work presents a methodology for the characterization of human reliability based on fuzzy set... more This work presents a methodology for the characterization of human reliability based on fuzzy sets concepts, which has been implemented in an innovative decision support system, providing managers with an intelligent computational tool for reducing the possibility of human errors in industrial activities. Considering that such activities can be described as operational, maintenance or inspection processes, which are composed of a set of procedures, the methodology is carried out in two levels: the process level and the procedure level. The proposed system provides a human reliability index, which allows the identification of problems that may constitute causes of human errors, as well as the indication of possible strategies for the control of potentially adverse impacts of interactions that add uncertainty and complexity to processes.

As current techniques, based on collaborative filtering, address those issues with only partial success, the present paper proposes the use of a hybrid system of recommendation in online stores. This system makes use of collaborative filtering and of a fuzzy number model based on marketing concepts. Experimental results show that the proposed system presents great invariance to sparse databases, which is of great value for retail companies.

This work discusses the use of an evolvable proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller tha... more This work discusses the use of an evolvable proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller that consists of a PID controller hardware whose gains can be set, for example, by evolutionary computation techniques, such as genetic algorithms. Due to PID controllers' widespread use in industry, tuning procedures for them are always a topic of interest. An evolutionary immune inspired algorithm, named clonal selection algorithm, is used for tuning the controller so that closed-loop step response specifications are satisfied. By using this procedure, designers need only specify the desired closed-loop response. Experiments with different processes indicate that the gains obtained through clonal selection algorithms may provide better responses than those obtained by the classical Ziegler-Nichols method. Moreover, the clonal algorithm is capable of generating adequate gains for systems where classical rules are not applicable.

This observation gave birth to the idea of combining the individual results from different classifiers to derive a consensus decision. This work investigates the potential of combining neural networks to remotely sensed images. A classifier system is built by integrating the results of a plurarity of feed-forward neural networks, each of them designed to have the best performance for one class. Fuzzy Integrals are used as the combining strategy. Experiments carried out to evaluate the system, using a satellite image of an area undergoing a rapid degradation process, have shown that the combination may yield a better performance than that of a single neural network.

Devido às temperaturas encontrada em águas profundas, muitas destas linhas ficaram totalmente obstruídas. O grande estoque de linhas consideradas irrecuperáveis motivou o desenvolvimento e implantação de um método de desobstrução com o uso de corrente elétrica, cuja operação é efetuada manualmente. Neste trabalho, apresenta-se o uso da equação da energia em uma simulação numérica do aquecimento elétrico para analisar a possibilidade de se automatizar a operação com o auxílio da lógica fuzzy. A lógica fuzzy fornece o ferramental para se traduzir em termos matemáticos as ações dos operadores humanos. The proposed system indicates to the specialist when a new calibration must be performed. The hybrid system is tested with a differential pressure instrument, used in mining for level and pressure controls.
