The historical process studies regarding the settlement help clarify the configuration of urban s... more The historical process studies regarding the settlement help clarify the configuration of urban space and the policies, means and behaviors which are effective in this configuration process. These kinds of studies are important in terms of indicating how and at what scales social structures are reflected on space and how it differentiates the space. By these differentiations, each city and the parts of them have different urban textures. In this study, Menteşe (in Muğla) that has a history of 5000 years history is determined as the field of study, because of having different urban textures. Social, cultural, economic policies and applications that have impact on social structure and consequently on urban structure are focused and the differentiations caused by these factors on urban texture in historical process are analyzed. Social, cultural, economic policies and applications affecting Menteşe urban space are analyzed under four periods. The first of these is the period before the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey; the second is the period between proclamation of the republic and the year 1950 that is the time in which public investments are intense; the third is between 1950 and 1980 in which construction plans are pioneers of urban development and the fourth period is from 1980 to date in which private investments are intense. Different urban developments and differentiations of urban textures are seen clearly in these periods in Menteşe urban space. The variations in urban textures are firstly analyzed through the historical urban development of Menteşe. Then, solid and voids, street texture, housing texture, rate of green space, rate of roads, rate of constructions, rate of facilities, structure-road relation, structure-structure relation and the relation of constructions with topography are analyzed and compared by taking samples from urban textures which were developed in different time periods.
