Three species (Brania pusilla, Lysidice cf. margaritacea and Sabellaria spinulosa) are new records for the Sea of Marmara. Three alien species (Polydora cornuta, Prionospio pulchra and Pseudopolydora paucibranchiata) were found at the shallow-water stations. Different polychaete assemblages occurred in the area and the mud percentage of sediment and salinity were the main factors related to their distribution. A new Polydora species, which is mainly characterized in having brownish pigmentation solely on the antero-dorsal sides of the body, and falcate major spines with only a bulge (anterior ones) or with a bulge and a small tooth, is described.

Amathina tricarinata (Linnaeus, 1767) and Petricola hemprichi Issel, 1869 have prior records from other regions of Mediterranean, but, Cardites akabana (Sturany, 1899) first recorded in this paper. Since all of them are present in the Red Sea or Suez Canal, they can be considered as Lessepsian immigrants.

A total of 15 species belonging to 7 families were determined among the benthic materials collected at 4 stations between the depths 4 and 40 m in December 2005. The materials were composed of species tolerant to pollution. Higher diversity and evenness index values were encountered at stations where dissolved oxygen values were relatively high and total organic carbon values were low. The material included four alien species: Desdemona ornata, Ficopomatus enigmaticus, Polydora cornuta and Streblospio gynobranchiata. The most dominant alien species in the area was P. cornuta, with 4340 individuals per square meter. Alien species comprised 46% of total polychaete populations and their distributions were strongly affected by the abiotic factors such as dissolved oxygen, total organic carbon and depth.

Benthic samples were collected from 20 stations at depths ranging from 1 to 30m in October 2002. Salinity of sea water varied between 35.3 and 38.6psu, temperature between 18.8 and 21.6ºC, dissolved oxygen between 2.6 and 8.9mg/l, and silt-clay percentage of sediment between 1.6 and 94.1. The assessment of ecological quality status (EQS) was performed by applying the biotic indexes BENTIX, AMBI, BOPA, BO2A and Shannon-Wiener diversity, in combination with the estimation of total organic carbon (TOC) content of sediments. BOPA and BO2A indexes tended to overestimate the EQS of the stations. BENTIX was the most efficient index as it demonstrated conceivable EQS results with respect to TOC load and successfuly determined "acceptable" or "not acceptable" status of the stations. TOC content of sediment, which significantly correlated with several benthic measures (S, N, AMBI, BENTIX), proved to be a valuable proxy measure in evaluating the likelihood of benthic impairment. When overall EQS of northern Marmara Sea was discussed, the region was designated as ecologically disturbed with only 25.7% of the stations in acceptable status.

As expected, the diversity and species' variety decreased as the sediments became muddier and as the stress increased. The AMBI index failed to detect the spatial differentiation of the EcoQ between the sites whereas, the BENTIX index succeeded (in 70% of the cases) in producing an ecologically relevant classification reflecting the environmental pressures. Results suggested that risks of reduced species' richness and diversity from organic loading and other associated stressors in sediments should be relatively low at TOC concentrations < about 6 mg/g, high at concentrations>about 22 mg/g, and intermediate at concentrations in-between. It is suggested that these TOC critical points may be used as a general screening-level indicator for assessing the EcoQ in association with reduced biodiversity over coastal areas receiving organic wastes and other pollutants from human activities. It is further suggested that both assignment of species to ecological groups and classification scales for biotic indices (AMBI, BENTIX) for sites in the Mediterranean Sea should be readjusted so as to be closer related to environmental variables.
