Revisers' and translators' attitudes and expectations are particularly relevant if we wish to describe, understand and explain the motivations ofthese professionals. Theirattitudes and expectations have been the subject ofsome investigations, in particular those concerned with how professionals do and should perform various translation activities in different domains." However, although much progress has been madein researching translation revision (for example, Mossop 2007a, 2014a; Robert 2014a; Robert et al. 2017a, 2018), to the best of our knowledge, there is no research concerningattitudes and expectations about revision practices in medical or biomedical translation.It is not known whatattitudes and expectations revisers have about professional translators and translation in biomedical settings. Howtranslators think they should translate and what they think revisers expect from them arealso notfully understood. Atthe intersection of Descriptive Translation Studies and social sciences, our interdisciplinary, empirical and descriptive study addresses the question of whether revisers' attitudes and expectations about competences and working practices are similar to or different from those oftranslators. To do so, we shall look at the results from a questionnaire circulated among professional revisers and translators from June 2017 to April 2018. The questionnaire was originally part of a larger descriptive study aboutthe beliefs, translation behaviours and translation options of 60 agents' with different roles and levels of experience, namely novice translators, experienced translators, revisers and health professionals, Different types of beliefs were elicited and then compared with translators' behaviour and with revisers' andhealth professionals'preferences regardingtranslation options in biomedical eeee Exploring a two-way street 149 translasion (Valdez 2019). The analysis showed that translators and revisers not only expressed beliefs associated with source and target orientation (which was the focus of the study), but also beliefs about competences and working practices. Consequently, a follow-up study was conducted with a larger group ofparticipants (n= 71), to whom the same questionnaire was administered. The findings discussed here concern the attitudes and expectations expressed about competences and working practices in revision andtranslation. The next section provides a brief overview of the main guiding concepts of our research, that is, 'attitudes' and 'expectations' and their connection to translation norms. Then wecontextualize biomedical translation within medical translation and define what is meantby these terms. The chapter then goes on to describe and discuss the methods usedin our study. In thefinal sections, the results are described anddiscussed, together with the implications and our conclusions. One of the main reasons why attitudes, in particular, take centre stage in the study of behaviouris that they are considered "'precursors of behavior" (Cohen 1964: 137-8). Post-editing machine translation (MT) is an important step towards high quality translations. In ... more Post-editing machine translation (MT) is an important step towards high quality translations. In order to better understand the post-editing process, a better understanding of the relationship between MT output and the post-editing of this output is necessary. While automatic evaluation metrics such as the widely used BLEU can be used to compare the overall quality of different MT systems, a more detailed error analysis is necessary to identify the typical errors that appear in MT output and the subsequent post-editing. By using a fine-grained Translation Quality Assessment approach and grouping translation errors into source text-related error sets, we link MT errors to errors after post-editing to examine their relationship. This paper argues in favour of a more rigorous methodology for corpusbased translation studies. A... more This paper argues in favour of a more rigorous methodology for corpusbased translation studies. According to our proposal, research papers in the field should be minimally required to (i) provide a meticulous overview of the corpus materials used and of the exact procedures for selecting, annotating and sifting the data; (ii) comment on any specific problems encountered during data selection and annotation, including explicit and motivated statements as to the solutions being adopted; (iii) include elaborate testing for statistical significance as a complement of, not in opposition to, thorough qualitative analysis. This approach, we suggest, not only offers a way around many theoretical and methodological problems that have been noted in the recent literature (e.g., House 2008; Becher 2010; Bernardini and Ferraresi 2011), it also facilitates more rigorous replication and reinterpretation of previous work, potentially leading to a re-assessment of some popular but unproven assumptions such as the notion that linguistic features in translations are independent of source language or genre. By thus moving forward the empirical cycle of testing and re-testing of hypotheses, the methodology advocated here encourages collaborative research, and leads ultimately to more scientific progress.
