The objective of the study were to,(i)describe the socioeconomic characteristics of the respondents, (ii) determine the profitability of catfish production (iii) analyze the farmers' socioeconomic factors that influence catfish production and (iv)identify the constraints to catfish production in the study area. Percentage response, Net farm income and ordinary least square regression analyses were used to address the objectives of the study. The result showed that 78.33% of the respondents were male farmers, while the females accounted for 21.67% . In addition, 61.7% of the respondents were below the age of 41years, while 21.67% were above 41 years. 76% of the sampled farmers were married and 15% were single. Descriptive statistics and Logit regression models were used to address the objectives of the study. One hundred youths were selected for the study using multi stage random sampling technique. Data were collection from the respondents through secondary and primary sources. The results of the socioeconomic characteristics show that most (58%) of the youth were of less than 30 years and single. The determinant factors to youth participation in broiler production were awareness of the programe, age of the youth, years of the farming experience and farm size. The specific objectives of the study are to determine the socioeconomic characteristics of female headed household; identify causes of food insecurity among female headed households; ascertain the determinant factors to household food security status among female headed household; analyze the coping strategies adopted by female headed households and identify the limiting factors to female headed household in attainment of food security.120 respondents were selected using multi stage random sampling procedure. Questionnaire was used to collect the data. Percentage responses and Logit regression model were used to determine the research objectives. The results revealed that the most of the respondents were aged, widowed and moderately educated. Also, natural disaster was the major cause of food insecurity and reduction in meal frequency was a popular cooping strategy adopted by the household. Furthermore, age of household, level of education, income level, and membership of social organization were the determinants to households&#39; access to food security. Finally, the major limiting factors to the attainment of the farmers&#39; food security were poor access to credit and extension services. The needs to enhance the women&#39;s access to education, credit and extension services were recommended.

The present study was aimed at addressing the problems of adoption of improved production technol... more The present study was aimed at addressing the problems of adoption of improved production technologies of cocoyam from socioeconomic point of view. This research was indispensable especially now that this crop is facing possible extinction in South East and other zones of the country where it serves as staple food and as well a cash crop. Purposive and multi stage random sampling techniques were used to select 120 farmers for the detailed study. Data, comprising information on the farmers&#39; socio – economic characteristics and other quantitative variables relevant to the study were collected using well structured questionnaire and personal interview. Descriptive statistics such as percentage response was used to address the farmers&#39; socio – economic characteristics and constraints to cocoyam production respectively, while the extent of adoption was captured using Tobit model analysis. The result shows that extension visit, cooperative membership; off farm income and educational level were the major determinants of extent of technology adoption of cocoyam in the study area. More so, the results revealed that the major constrains to the production of cocoyam were poor access to credit, high cost of labour, high cost of fertilizer and high cost of planting materials. Policies options aimed at increasing farmers&#39; access to fertilizer, educational programmes such as adult education, cooperative membership and extension contacts were proffered.

— Allocative efficiency of fruited pumpkin (telferia occidentalis) production in Ayamalum L.G.A o... more — Allocative efficiency of fruited pumpkin (telferia occidentalis) production in Ayamalum L.G.A of Anambra Sate was studied using 120 farmers selected using multi stage sampling technique. Data for the work were generated through structured questionnaire and interview schedules. Percentage response, Ordinary least square regression, allocative indices and net farm income analysis were used to address the objectives. Result of the study showed that fruited pumpkin was a profitable venture in the study area. Furthermore, fruited pumpkin farmers did not achieve optimum allocative efficiency in the use of any of the farm resources. In general, the elasticity of production showed that they were operating at increasing rate of return to scale. The constraints to fruited pumpkin production included; high labour cost, high cost of fertilizer, poor access to credit and poor extension visit. To achieve optimum allocative efficiency and hence maximum profit, farmers should be encouraged to increase their use of those underutilized resources, while decreased in the use of over utilized resources Policies that would enable farmers to employ more of the resources should be put in place in order to improve their performances. More so, there is need to improve farmers&#39; access to credit through microfinance banks and other commercial banks, use of labour saving device such as hand-driven plough and improve their frequencies to extension contact.

The experiment was carried out at the experimental farm of Federal College of Agriculture, Ishiagu, Ivo LGA of Ebonyi State, Nigeria, during the 2009 and 2010 cropping seasons, using ginger as test crop. In 2009, there was less than 40% sprouting of ginger at 4 WAP but all the mulched plots were significantly higher than the control. In 2010, there was also significant difference (P < 0.05) in sprouting at 4 WAP but not at 6 and 8 WAP. At 6 WAP there was 50 to 62% sprouting across the treatments. However, at 8 WAP, there was 80% or more sprouting across the treatments. Number of leaves per plant showed that at 6 WAP on average, the organic mulch materials produced higher number of leaves when compared with either the control plot or the black polythene mulched plot. No significant differences occurred between the treatments at 8 WAP. In both years, the dry grass mulch resulted in significantly higher leaf area than the saw dust mulch. The mean leaf area for 2009 and 2010 was in the magnitude of dry grass >rice husk> saw dust > black polythene > control. There was increase in plant height from 4-12 WAP in 2009 and 2010. The organic mulches available were suitable for ginger production in the study area and the test crop UG1 is well adaptable to Ishiagu Environment. It is therefore concluded that mulching is imperative for ginger production and variety UG1 could be used to maximize production at Ishiagu environment. Dry grass and rice husk mulches should be used in Ishiagu environment.

Multi - stage random sampling technique was used to select 100 farmers from six towns in the study area. The data for the study were collected from both primary and secondary sources. Percentage and net farm income were used to capture the objectives of the study. The result revealed that majority of okra farmers were males, small scaled in operation and had no access to credit. The educational level, household size, and farming experience were the determinant variables to the profitability of the farm. The price parameter for labor, land value, pesticide and output price impacted significantly on the profitability of farmers. Okra is profitable in the study area with Net farm income of N265,356. The study recommended on the need to enhance farmers' access to improved production inputs (such as fertilizer and seed), education and credit.

The study measured the level of technical efficiency and its determinants among rabbit farmers in... more The study measured the level of technical efficiency and its determinants among rabbit farmers in Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Nigeria using stochastic frontier production function. Multi-stage sampling technique was used to select 60 rabbit farmers from which data were collected using well-structured questionnaire and oral interview. The estimated technical efficiency of rabbit farmers ranged from 56% to 95.0% with a mean of 23.0%. The educational level, rearing experience and access to credit were the determinants of technical efficiency of the rabbit farmers. There is a need in Improving farmers' access to education, credits and drugs and vaccines at lower costs in order to enhance farmers' technical efficiency for the sustainability of rabbit production especially now the conventional livestock is becoming costly.

The specific objectives of the study were to describe the socio economic characteristics of the respondents; identify the environmental effect of pig farming on the environs; identify the method of pig management and waste disposal methods among the respondents, determine the factors affecting the choice of waste disposal methods by respondents; and identify the constraints to wastes managements pig production in the study area. A total of 60 farmers were selected using purposive and multi stage random sampling techniques. The data were collected using questionnaire and secondary source. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistical such as percentage and frequency distribution table for objectives i, ii and iv. The objective iii was captured using multi nominal logit model. The results showed that most of the respondents were aged, males, educated and had large household size. More so, on the method of pig management, intensive method was the most popular. Additionally, open lagoon, dumping in the farm and store in the bag were the major methods for waste disposal in pig production. In addition, the result of the multinomial regression model on the choice of methods of wastes disposal showed that age of the respondents, farming experience and membership of cooperative organization were positive and significant. The major constraints to wastes management in pig production in the study area were poor access to credit, poor road network, water problem and high costs of labour. There is need to ensure farmers' access to credit, good road net work and water availability.
