Vitamin D is known to have a systemic anti-inflammatory action. We aimed to evaluate the effects of vitamin D supplementation on biomarkers of inflammation and endothelial activation [high sensitivity C- reactive protein (hs-CRP) and endothelin-1 (ET-1)], flow mediated dilation (FMD) in patients with RA. We studied 29 subjects (20 females and 9 males, aged 40 to 80) with RA and coexistent hypovitaminosis D, in treatment with tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α inhibitors. Patients were divided in two groups: 15 subjects treated with oral cholecalciferol (10.000 UI-25drops/week, for 12 weeks), 14 subjects not treated with vitamin D supplementation. We found no differences in anthropometric and metabolic parameters between the two groups. In the subjects treated with cholecalciferol a decrease in PTH was observed (p = 0,03), associated with no changes of serum calcium and phosphorus. Among patients treated with cholecalciferol hs-CRP (p = 0.03), DAS28 (p = 0.01), ET-1 levels (p = 0.04) decreased after treatment, and FMD increased (p = 0,02) after treatment. No differences in hs-CRP, DAS28, ET-1 levels and FMD were observed after 12 weeks among subjects that did not receive cholecalciferol therapy. Vitamin D supplementation exerts beneficial effects in terms of inflammation biomarker levels and disease activity. Furthermore vitamin D supplementation positively modulates endothelial function, decreasing serum ET-1 and improving FMD. In conclusion, our study shows that vitamin D supplementation improves symptoms and inflammation in RA patients and could reduce cardiovascular risk in patients with RA.

Prior work employing classical psychometric methods of analysis had already established the reliability and validity of the instrument. The present study furthered this scrutiny by examining whether the different prosocialness items were equally effective in discriminating people and equally informative; it also examined gender differences in the functioning of the items. The results of IRT analyses strongly supported the measurement effectiveness and sensitivity of the 16 prosocialness items, and findings are discussed for their implications in behavioral assessment research on prosocialness.

Aim of the present study was to explore PTSD and post-traumatic spectrum symptoms in L’Aquila (Italy) 2009 earthquake survivors and their correlations with age, gender and degree of exposure.Method1488 subjects were investigated by means of the TALS-SR5. The total sample was divided, by random extraction, in 8 homogenous subgroups comparable for gender, age (≤40 vs >40 years) and direct/indirect exposure to the earthquake.Results41.3% of exposed subjects presented PTSD vs 16.6% of not exposed. Women reported significantly higher PTSD prevalence rates and post-traumatic spectrum symptoms than men. Exposed subjects reported higher PTSD rates both in the whole sample and in all subgroups, with the only exception of younger men. Conclusion Our results confirm different vulnerability to PTSD after earthquake on the basis of gender, age and degree of exposure.

In fact, as numerous studies demonstrated, approaches taking into account the personal sphere of individuals’ functioning only, tend to be limited because do not consider the social world 1 2. The idea that social context affects mental health is not new 3-5. There is an extensive research on social support as a protective factor from psychopathology influencing physical and mental health 6 7. In recent years we saw a growing literature studying several social variables that affect individual functioning and psychological adaptation and physical and mental well-being 8 9. Emerging evidences deriving not only from epidemiology and social psychology but also from neuroscience demonstrate the relevance of social risk factors for mental disorders 10. In the past, studies that investigated social isolation and health, took into ac...

In recent years the focus shifted toward more general constructs that can account for stability and coherence of the scheme that each person applies to relate to the social word as a whole. The construct of social connectedness seems to be closest to this aim. In this study, we present the validation of the Social Connectedness Scale - Revised (SCS-R) developed by Lee et al. on a sample of Italian general population. Methods We collected data from 197 subjects heterogeneous for gender and age. We then investigated the validity of the scale through an exploratory factor analysis and its reliability by calculating Cronbach’s Alpha. Differences in the mean scores of SCS-R due to gender, age and education were investigated. To test the criterion validity of the scale, we analyzed the correlations between the SCS-R...

It may be particularly important for subjects who are already ill, and above all if suffering from mental disorders. This study assessed the capacity of “bounce back” of subjects with different mental disorders exposed to the L’Aquila (Italy) earthquake, in order to investigate its relationship with diagnosis and severity of mental disorders.

Method: We performed a correlational analysis of the relationship between humiliation, depression, resilience, and negative primary familial environment in 80 clinically depressed subjects (41 men and 39 women; mean age = 40.71, standard deviation SD = 9.94) and a strictly matched sample of 80 non-clinical subjects (41 men and 39 women; mean age = 40.64, SD = 10.24). We also implemented a hierarchical multiple regression analysis for each sample, to test the prediction of these variables on depression. Results: Humiliation showed positive correlations with depressive factors, while negative correlations emerged with resilience in both samples. The hierarchical multiple regression analysis showed humiliation to be the most predictive factor of depression in the clinical sample only. Conclusion: This study improves the understanding of the relationship of humiliation and depression in both clinical and non-clinical populations.
