Industrialised and durable retrofitting solutions for buildings

The EU’s building stock is relatively old. Half of all homes in most EU countries were built pre-1970 and before the first thermal regulations. This is why upgrading the energy efficiency of the building envelope – the physical barrier between indoor and unconditioned environment – is important. The INFINITE project will pave the way for the decarbonisation of the EU building stock by facilitating the uptake of all-in-one industrialised envelope technologies. INFINITE's approach for deep renovation of buildings will result in both cost and timing reduction, with attention to the life cycle perspective and the design for assembly and disassembly, including end-of-life residual value and the construction and demolition waste. This project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 958397

What's the most valuable outcome of an innovation project? Is it the technologies? Yes... but not only! 🤝 Knowledge grows when it's shared. One of the goals of INFINITE has always been to make the project's results available beyond the consortium: and that also means sharing them within our own organisations. At the latest Institute for Renewable Energy – Eurac Research meeting, Martino Gubert presented the latest results from INFINITE to around 150 colleagues working on energy-efficient buildings and the energy transition. The focus was on one of the project's most innovative solutions: a prefabricated timber façade that integrates ventilation and HVAC systems into a single element, developed, tested in the lab, and finally demonstrated on real buildings. 💡 Moments like these help ideas travel beyond a single project, sparking new discussions, collaborations, and future innovations! Ravne na Koroškem, Slovenia 📍 Innovation does not happen only in Europe's largest cities. It happens in places like Ravne na Koroškem too, where European research and innovation can create tangible benefits for local communities. That's why it felt particularly meaningful to hold the final review of the #INFINITE project here, at the Slovenian demonstration building. Together with European Commission Project Officer Jonas Heldeberg and Reviewer Nikos Sakkas (Apintech), we visited the building and reviewed the results achieved over the last 5 years. We saw INFINITE kits in operation: multifunctional #façades, architecturally integrated BIPV, smart windows, green wall, and integrated ventilation solutions. 🔎 One aspect stood out throughout the visit and the review: industrialised renovation is not only about energy performance. 👉 It can also improve the appearance, quality, and overall value of existing buildings. The #BIPV solution attracted particular attention, demonstrating how renewable energy generation can be seamlessly integrated into architecture. The review was also an opportunity to reflect on some of the project's broader achievements: 🔹 Demonstration projects in Italy, Slovenia, and France 🔹 Progress towards market uptake, including the ongoing ATEx certification process in France 🔹 Strong collaboration across the entire value chain 🔹 Extensive dissemination, training, and knowledge-transfer activities 🔹 Delivery of the objectives set at the beginning of the project 🙌 Thank you to all partners, advisory board, reviewers, and the European Commission for accompanying us on this journey. The project is approaching its conclusion, but the knowledge, solutions, and collaborations developed within INFINITE will continue far beyond it! Scaling renovation is not only about technologies. It's also about sharing the knowledge needed to make them happen. Industrialised deep retrofit is still a relatively new field, and sharing practical experience is essential to accelerate its adoption. Can industrialised renovation also make cities greener? 🌿 We have just released a new INFINITE “White Paper”... or perhaps, given the topic, we should call it a "Green Paper"? 🌱 📘 “Greening solutions for industrialised deep retrofit” explores how green roofs and green façades can be integrated into prefabricated renovation systems, combining energy performance with environmental and climate benefits. The paper shows why greening solutions matter in deep retrofit: 🔹 reducing surface temperatures through shading and evapotranspiration 🔹 improving urban microclimate and comfort 🔹 retaining rainwater and supporting biodiversity 🔹 enhancing the performance of integrated energy systems such as PV And this is not only theoretical. Within INFINITE, green solutions were: 🏗️ integrated into prefabricated “all-in-one” façade and roof kits 🧪 tested in full-scale mock-ups 📊 monitored under real environmental conditions Results from the façade testing facility at Eurac Research showed temperature reductions of up to: 🌡️ 11°C on the structure 🌡️ 18°C on the façade surface during peak summer conditions.
