Book review of "The Affinal Relationship System: a new approach to kinship and marriage among the AustralianAborigines at Port Keats" by Aslaug Falkenberg and Johannes Falkenberg, Oslo Studies in Social AnthropologyNo. 1. Ethnographic Museum, University of Oslo, Norway

They make no excuses for their departure from some of their earlier claims made in Kin & Totem, openly admitting that so powerful was Radcliffe-Brown's influence in anthropology at that time, that they (albeit unwillingly) straightjacketed their data into this model of Aboriginal social organization. In this later publication, they argue that among the Murinbata at least, genealogical links do not form the basis of the kinship system as maintained by Radcliffe-Brown, but that rather it is the affinal relationship system which is the major organizing principle.

Walter Edmund Roth: ethnographic collector and Aboriginal protector

He was also one of Queensland's first official Protectors of Aboriginals, appointed immediately after that colony introduced its now-infamous Aboriginals Protection and Restriction of the Sale of Opium Act, 1897. This paper explores Roth's twin careers as ethnographic collector and Aboriginal Protector, teasing out the connections and commonalities between the two. It was for his achievements in ethnography and collecting, as well as his medical expertise, that he was appointed to the Protectorship. He carried out both his anthropological work and his administrative duties with determination and dedication. Yet his continuing activities as an ethnographer and collector contributed substantially to his downfall as a senior figure in Aboriginal administration....

In a general sense, although response to death is similar on other Torres Strait islands and among Island populations resident on the mainland, there are significant differences between some of the islands in terms of the roles ascribed to specific kin at certain times. This paper therefore should not be regarded as anything more than a description of the social relations of death as they occur on Yam Island in the 1980s.

In particular, it draws attention to the importance of the maternal uncle in the raising of children, as a means of advising workers in the helping professions that the father's roles and responsibilities do not necessarily mirror his role in non-indigenous families.

Through the recurrent use of certain images, through particular ways of relating to one another, and through specific ways of acting, some selected aspects of the past are brought forward and incorporated within the value system of the present. The assertion and affirmation of belonging provides a solid and familiar base from which Yam Island peopleas a minority group, may encounter and embrace the contemporary world. This cultural strength and confidence is effectively maintained and communicated through such techniques as story-telling, reminiscence, joking, dance, yarning and song; through ways of acting; and through the visiting and/or avoidance of significant cultural sites. Knowledge of this past and participation in its cultur...

Book Review. No Ordinary Judgement: Mabo, The Murray Islanders' Land Case. Nonie Sharp. Aboriginal Studies Press. 1996

As an anthropologist who has been involved in this case from its inception, Sharp is uniquely placed to give us a particular view and reading of the ways in which the Murray Island plaintiffs and their counsel put their case for having traditional ownership of land recognised. The courtroom drama is the central context within which Sharp explores the major moments and turning points in the case, as it moved between the High Court and the Supreme Court of Queensland over a period of 10 years.
