As the financial sector continues to evolve, the role of Credit Reference Bureaus has never been more critical and especially at the #eabs2026 conference hosted by the Kenya Bankers Association advancing conversations on the theme Navigating Credit Risk in the Digital Transformation Era. Together with financial institutions, regulators, and industry partners, they are helping build a trusted credit information ecosystem that supports responsible lending, improves risk management, and expands access to finance. Through the Credit Information Sharing mechanism, Kenya has made significant strides in reducing information asymmetry and enabling more informed credit decisions. The continued collaboration between CIS Kenya and the 3 licensed Credit Reference Bureaus including Creditinfo Group Creditinfo Kenya Ltd Metropol Corporation Limited and TransUnion Kenya is strengthening #dataquality, promoting interoperability, and driving innovations that enhance confidence in the country's credit infrastructure. The presence of the Bureau CEOs including Morris Maina, Michael Nyaga and Gideon Kipyakwai at this year's conference reflects a shared commitment to shaping the future of credit information sharing, one where trusted data powers resilient financial institutions, responsible lending, and inclusive economic growth. As digital transformation reshapes financial services, our collective focus remains clear: strengthening the CIS ecosystem to ensure that better data leads to better decisions for the benefit of lenders, borrowers, and the broader economy. Together, we are building the future of credit information sharing in Kenya. #EABS2026 #CISKenya #CreditInformationSharing #CreditReferenceBureaus #CreditRisk #DataQuality #ResponsibleLending #FinancialInclusion #DigitalTransformation #Banking #FinancialServices #EastAfrica

Building trust in credit starts with building trust in data. At the 23rd #EABS2026 Conference, the conversation was clear: as financial services become increasingly digital, sustainable growth must be underpinned by strong risk management, resilient institutions, and confidence in the financial system. In his keynote address, Central Bank of Kenya Governor Dr. @Kamau Thugge, CBS, emphasized the importance of balancing innovation with stability, noting that Kenya's economic resilience, including the sustained stability of the Kenya Shilling despite global headwinds has been supported by sound macroeconomic fundamentals, prudent policy, and continued investor confidence. For us at CIS Kenya, this reinforces an important principle: Strong economies are built on informed lending decisions, and informed lending decisions are built on trusted credit information. As the industry utility for Credit Information Sharing, we work closely with Credit Reference Bureaus, financial institutions, regulators, and ecosystem partners to strengthen the integrity of Kenya's credit information infrastructure. Through initiatives such as the #CISValidataTool, industry-wide data quality standards, and collaborative innovation, we are helping create a more reliable, interoperable, and trusted credit ecosystem. When lenders have access to high-quality, timely, and consistent credit information, they are better equipped to: • Make responsible lending decisions. • Manage credit risk more effectively. • Expand access to finance with greater confidence. • Strengthen the resilience and stability of Kenya's financial sector. The future of digital finance will not be defined by technology alone. It will be defined by the quality of the data that powers it. We are proud to stand alongside the Central Bank of Kenya, the Credit Reference Bureaus, and industry stakeholders in advancing a credit information ecosystem that supports innovation, strengthens financial stability, and enables inclusive economic growth. #EABS2026 #CISKenya #CreditInformationSharing #CreditRisk #DigitalTransformation #FinancialStability #DataQuality #CreditReferenceBureaus #ResponsibleLending #FinancialInclusion #Banking #EastAfrica

Day 3 of the 23rd East African Banking School Conference is packed with game-changing insights! Christine Waita, Manager, Data and Compliance, Kenya Bankers Association has delivered a compelling presentation on Sectoral Credit Risk Assessment: Insights from disaggregated credit data. Leveraging disaggregated data from KBA’s newly launched Gender-Disaggregated MSME Dashboard (which tracks over KES 586 Billion in outstanding value), Christine challenged traditional banking assumptions with hard numbers: 1. The Gender Gap: Women have a 26.3% NPL ratio compared to 25.0% for men, yet they receive a mere 19% of credit value. This raises a critical question: are credit models simply repeating historical patterns of exclusion? 2. The Collateral Paradox: Counterintuitively, collateralized loans carry a higher NPL ratio (28.4%) than uncollateralized ones (22.4%). Collateralized write-offs are also 2.3x higher, proving that collateral merely alters the recovery path rather than preventing default. Digital Credit Stress: Digital Credit Providers are experiencing severe portfolio stress, with an NPL ratio reaching 81.3%. 3. Age Profile: The 35–44 cohort represents the highest risk concentration with 31% of Value at Risk. Through our work in credit information sharing and national policy working groups, CIS Kenya continues to champion data quality and trusted ecosystems that translate these stark realities into fairer, gender-lens credit frameworks. To our fellow risk professionals, credit providers, and policymakers: How can we, as an industry, better utilize disaggregated credit data to redesign risk-scoring models that actively dismantle historical exclusion without compromising portfolio quality? #EABS2026 #CreditRisk #FinancialInclusion #DataCompliance #EastAfricanBanking #RiskManagement
