Steve is Senior Lecturer in the Geography at the University of Leeds and Director of the Wildland Research Institute (WRi). He has interest in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and their application to landscape assessment and environmental modelling. He is particularly interested in wilderness, wild lands and rewilding. He is a member of Wild Europe Initiative Executive Committee, the Rewilding Britain Steering Group, the European Wilderness Society and he sits on the Advisory Board of Wild Ennerdale.

The impacts associated with alternative methods of agricultural production, and the factors that ... more The impacts associated with alternative methods of agricultural production, and the factors that drive their adoption, are critically dependent on the scale at which they are applied. Using organic farming as a case study, this project operating from 2006-2009 in the UK, will undertake an integrated assessment of scale effects by studying matched sets of farms situated in landscapes with high and low concentrations of organic farming. Clusters of organic and conventional farms to work with have been identifi ed in the South West and Midlands region of England.

I... more Farmland abandonment takes place across the world due to socio-economic and ecological drivers. In Europe agricultural and environmental policies aim to prevent abandonment and halt ecological succession. Ecological rewilding has been recently proposed as an alternative strategy. We developed a framework to assess opportunities for rewilding across different dimensions of wilderness in Europe. We mapped artificial light, human accessibility based on transport infrastructure, proportion of harvested primary productivity (i.e., ecosystem productivity appropriated by humans through agriculture or forestry), and deviation from potential natural vegetation in areas projected to be abandoned by 2040. At the continental level, the levels of artificial light were low and the deviation from potential natural vegetation was high in areas of abandonment. Rewilding in England and Wales: A Review of Recent Developments, Issues, and Concerns

This paper reviews the emerging wild land policy in the United Kingdom-in England and Wales in pa... more This paper reviews the emerging wild land policy in the United Kingdom-in England and Wales in particular-and the environmental, social, political and economic drivers that make extensive protected wild land areas a possibility in what is otherwise a crowded and intensively developed island nation. Various future scenarios for wild land and rewilding in England and Wales are described including some warnings about the threats from renewable energy developments. Should there develop a strong political will, the paper concludes that there remains a core of significant wild lands in key areas that can be built on to create a spatially continuous network of wilder areas for the benefit of people and wildlife.
