Some traditions are measured not by how long they have endured, but by how many people they continue to bring together. For many communities across Malaysia, preparing Bubur Asyura during the month of Muharram is one of them. More than a traditional dish, Bubur Asyura is prepared collectively, with families, neighbours and volunteers each playing a part before it is shared with others. It is a tradition rooted in generosity, cooperation and the simple act of giving. This Muharram, employees from Wasco Coatings Malaysia and Wasco Lindung came together to continue that tradition, preparing and distributing 500 packs of Bubur Asyura to employees and neighbouring communities through Masjid Seberang Balok and Masjid Sungai Ular. Supported by 20 #TeamWasco volunteers, the initiative reflected the same spirit of collaboration that has brought communities together for generations. At Wasco, we believe positive social impact begins with people. Sometimes, it starts with simply coming together, giving our time, and carrying forward traditions that continue to strengthen the communities around us. Giving back to the community often begins with simple acts of kindness and a shared commitment to make a difference. Recently, 18 #TeamWasco volunteers from Wasco Pipe Sabah (WPS) visited JIREH Home in Tuaran for a community outreach programme aimed at supporting the home’s children and caregivers. The volunteers contributed essential supplies, including food, hygiene items, educational materials and a chest freezer to support the home’s daily needs. They also rolled up their sleeves for gotong-royong activities to help improve the surroundings, while contributing pre-loved clothing and books as part of the initiative. Benefiting 26 children and six wardens, the programme reflects WPS’ ongoing commitment to supporting the communities where it operates. Beyond the donations, it was an opportunity for #TeamWasco to come together in the spirit of volunteerism and contribute towards creating a more caring and supportive community. 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺.   At Engku Putri Field in Batam, that partnership has taken tangible form through the revitalisation of the sports facilities and children’s playground by PT Wasco Engineering Indonesia, together with its partners PT Schneider Electric France, PT Eka Vita, PT Jotun Indonesia and PT Batam Cyclet under Wasco’s Social Impact Programme.   Officially inaugurated by Dr. H. Amsakar Achmad, Mayor of Batam and Head of BP Batam, with the handover represented by Mr. Balaji Govindan, Chief Operating Officer of EFD Wasco, on 25 June 2026, the project brought together Mr. Firmansyah, Regional Secretary of Batam City, Heads of the Batam City Regional Government Agencies (OPD), Wasco’s management, and representatives from partner organisations, underscoring the role of public-private partnerships in creating shared value for the community.   The revitalisation included the refurbishment of the basketball, futsal and volleyball courts, installation of new sports equipment, lighting, safety fencing and supporting amenities, alongside the renewal of the children’s playground to provide a safer and more welcoming public space for families and the wider community.   As Dr. H. Amsakar Achmad noted during the ceremony, sustainable urban development cannot rely solely on government resources. It requires meaningful collaboration between the public and private sectors. This initiative reflects that shared commitment by creating public spaces that will continue serving the community for years to come.   The timing is equally significant. Engku Putri Field is set to host an international youth basketball tournament in July 2026, welcoming participants from 37 countries, with the upgraded facilities providing a quality venue for both local residents and visiting athletes.   Speaking at the ceremony, Balaji Govindan, Chief Operating Officer, EFD Wasco, said: “We believe sustainable development extends beyond economic growth. By creating safe, inclusive and accessible public spaces, we aim to make a lasting contribution to the communities where we operate.”   The project forms part of Wasco’s broader Social Impact Programme. Over the weekend, our #TeamWasco colleagues from Wasco Pipe Sabah took on the challenge of conquering Maragang Hill in Mesilau, Kundasang, Sabah, in an expedition organised by the Wasco Pipe Sabah Sports & Recreation Club (WPSSRC). Setting off before dawn, the team navigated the trail together and successfully reached the summit of Maragang Hill, standing 2,232 metres above sea level. Their efforts were rewarded with a breathtaking sunrise overlooking Mount Kinabalu and the surrounding highlands, offering a glimpse of the natural beauty that makes Sabah truly remarkable. The journey was not without its challenges, but every step, shared laugh, and word of encouragement along the trail made the experience all the more memorable. More than 5,000 members of #TeamWasco, together with senior management, clients, and subcontractors, came together on 5 June 2026 at PT Wasco Engineering Indonesia for our Grand Toolbox Talk - one of the largest workforce engagement events held within the organisation. Held on World Environment Day, the event served as a timely reminder that sustainability goes beyond environmental stewardship. It is also about creating safer workplaces, supporting community wellbeing, and looking out for one another through the choices we make every day. This commitment was reflected throughout the programme, which provided an opportunity to reflect on key milestones and priorities, including World Day for Safety and Health at Work, our recent Blood Donation Drive, and ongoing efforts to strengthen incident prevention across all projects and facilities. A key highlight was the recognition of individuals whose proactive actions continue to make a positive difference in the workplace. Awards were presented to our HSE Performers, RC Super Champions, CARE Card Champions, and those whose reporting of incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions helped prevent potential harm. Their actions embody Wasco’s Core Values and reinforce an important message: incidents are prevented when people choose to speak up, intervene, and care for one another. Special recognition was also given to our HSE Superstar Award winner, whose exceptional commitment to workplace safety included reporting near misses and submitting more than 600 CARE Cards. His achievement demonstrates the value of consistent engagement and the impact that every individual can have in creating a safer work environment. The event also provided an opportunity to honour a respected colleague retiring after nearly 20 years of dedicated service. His contribution serves as a reminder that Wasco’s success is built not only on projects and milestones, but on the people whose commitment, experience, and dedication help shape our organisation over the long term. During the event, Mr. Govindan Balaji, Chief Operating Officer of EFD Wasco, expressed his appreciation for the retiree’s loyalty, dedication, and valuable contributions throughout his years of service with the company. Where do we draw the line? That was one of the key questions explored during the awareness session on Corporate Liability and Anti-Money Laundering and Counter Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) Essentials. While compliance is often associated with policies and regulations, the session served as a reminder that integrity starts with the decisions we make every day - recognising red flags, understanding our responsibilities, speaking up when something does not seem right, and knowing where the line is drawn. With #TeamWasco colleagues participating both in person and virtually, the session also provided valuable insights into corporate liability under Section 17A of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act, whistleblower protections, reporting obligations, and the importance of maintaining a strong culture of integrity across the organisation. One of the key highlights for Wasco Pipe Sabah at OGSE Sabah 2026 was the opportunity to welcome Yang Berhormat Datuk Ewon Benedick, Deputy Chief Minister III of Sabah and Minister of Industrial Development, Entrepreneurship and Transport Sabah, to our booth during the event’s official closing ceremony.
