Over ons

Avantium develops and commercializes innovative technologies for the production of materials based on sustainable carbon feedstocks, i.e. carbon from biomass or carbon from the air (CO2). The most advanced technology is the YXY® Technology that catalytically converts plant-based sugars into FDCA (furandicarboxylic acid), the key building block for the sustainable plastic PEF (polyethylene furanoate). PEF is known under the brand name releaf®, an EU registered trademark of Avantium. Avantium has successfully demonstrated the YXY® Technology at its pilot plant in Geleen, the Netherlands, and is in the process of starting the world's first commercial plant for FDCA in Delfzijl, the Netherlands. Avantium also provides advanced catalysis products and services to organizations who desire to gain efficiency in their processes.

  • The journey begins with something simple: a seed. 🌱 Add sunlight, water, and time, and it grows into a plant. From that plant, we extract sugars. From those sugars, we create FDCA. And from FDCA, we produce PEF, which we branded releaf® by avantium, a circular plastic that offers better barrier properties, lighter weight, and a smaller carbon footprint. It’s a chain of transformation. Nature provides the raw material. Science provides the tools. And the result is a material that challenges everything we thought we knew about plastic. It doesn’t just break down differently. It starts differently. Swipe to see the full journey. ▶ #PEF #BioBased #Sustainability #FDCA

Day 1 vs. One Day You cannot reach "one day" without the humility of "day 1." ✨ Day 1: For us, this was a kitchen counter experiment. Dr. Gert-Jan Gruter, CTO of Avantium, took regular sugar from our pantry, tested a hypothesis, and proved a concept. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a start. ✨ One Day: We are building a complete portfolio of plant-based PEF-based applications and commercial products at a true industrial scale. Your "one day" portfolio is entirely dependent on what you choose to do on "day 1." Every industrial breakthrough is just a kitchen experiment that didn't quit. To everyone who has been with us since that first day: thank you for believing in the hypothesis that is now becoming an industrial reality. To everyone else just discovering us: join us as we scale the rest of the journey. There are many more "one days" to come. #ReleafbyAvantium #Releaf #Avantium #MaterialsScience #Bioplastics #GreenChemistry #IndustrialScale

With the current summer heatwave hitting us right now, it’s hard not to think about the environmental pressure our planet is under. These extreme weather events are a direct reminder of why we need to transition away from oil. It also makes it the perfect time to talk about changing the products we use every single day.☀️   We just got a brand-new prototype into the office that we wanted to share. It's a deodorant stick, injection-molded out of our plant-based #PEF by the team over at FaiveleyTech. What makes this milestone even more significant is that the non-mechanism external parts (cap, outer shell and base) were successfully produced using molds tooled for polystyrene - providing a fascinating glimpse into the future of manufacturing and proving that PEF’s potential stretches far beyond a simple PET bottle replacement.   #FaiveleyTech absolutely nailed the tolerances - the walls are rigid, and it feels just like any deodorant you'd buy at the store today.   The biggest difference? It is fossil-free. By eliminating crude oil from the equation, this packaging targets the root cause of the very heatwaves we are experiencing today.   Avantium has done the heavy lifting on the material science, and Faiveley Tech has proven the injection molding process works. Now, we just need the right commercial partner to help us scale a fossil-free future. If you are a packaging director or a brand manager in the personal care space looking to genuinely decouple your supply chain from crude oil, this is ready for you. Let’s start a conversation ➡️ hello@releaf.bio   Which brand should be the first to put their logo on a PEF beauty pack? #PersonalCarePackaging #MaterialScience #PlantbasedPlastic #PlantbasedPackaging #Avantium #ReleafbyAvantium #Releaf María Alejandra Murcia Laleh Maleki Bineke Posthumus

  • We are pleased to announce our collaboration with Portuguese textile manufacturer Casa da Malha - House of Knitting and sportswear brand Lacatoni to explore the potential of PEF (polyethylene furanoate) in textile applications. Together, we have developed a range of textile prototypes incorporating PEF-based yarns and fabrics, including a prototype sports shirt developed by Casa da Malha for Lacatoni. PEF, marketed by Avantium under the brand name releaf® by avantium, is a plant-based, recyclable polyester alternative made from renewable feedstocks. Combining sustainability benefits with strong performance characteristics, PEF offers promising opportunities for a wide range of textile applications. The sports shirt prototype will be showcased at Milano Unica in Milan from 7–9 July, one of Europe's leading textile trade fairs, providing an opportunity to demonstrate how next-generation materials can contribute to the future of performance apparel. We thank Casa da Malha and Lacatoni for their collaboration and look forward to continuing to explore innovative applications for renewable and circular materials. • Yesterday, we welcomed representatives of Progressief Nederland, Sjoukje van Oosterhout, Bram van den Groenendaal, Ines Kaljee, and Jarre Middeljans, to our Flagship Plant for an open and constructive discussion on accelerating the transition towards a fossil-free and circular chemical industry. Together, we discussed the opportunities and challenges facing the industry, and the policy measures needed to support the scale-up of sustainable solutions. Key topics included: → Strengthening market demand for sustainable carbon → Integrating innovative biobased materials into circular economy frameworks and regulations → Building the circular infrastructure needed for the future → Creating a level playing field between fossil-based and sustainable carbon products Representing Avantium were Marco Jansen, Jeroen Vogelzang, and Ingrid Goumans, who shared insights from our journey in scaling innovative plant-based solutions. The visit to the Flagship Plant was followed by a networking session at The Chemport Innovation Center by Groningen Seaports with fellow changemakers from ChainCraft, BioBTX, Paques Biomaterials, and UPPACT | The UnWaste Company to continue the dialogue and explore how industry, innovators, and policymakers can work together to accelerate the transition. A big thank you to PRO NL and all participants for the valuable exchange. Collaboration across the value chain will be essential to building a sustainable and competitive future for the chemical industry. releaf® by avantium #FossilFreeFuture #Sustainability #SustainableCarbon #BioBasedMaterials
