Crafting Software Careers

Over ons

“𝐔𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐲, 𝐰𝐞’𝐯𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬.” The last 3 years of software recruitment in the Dutch market have been brutal. I’ve been doing this for 17 years. And the last three were fundamentally different from anything before. We came from a market where: Big tech was always hiring. Visas were common. Companies like Booking, Adyen, Just Eat, DAZN and Miro hired at scale. Even traditionally Dutch-speaking organisations hired English-speaking engineers without hesitation. Salaries followed demand. Fast. I spoke to 27-year-old backend engineers with four years of experience earning €90k, casually stating they wanted €100k next. And they even got it. Then the music stopped. Post-COVID, everything shifted at once. Interest rates went up. Money became expensive. Investment slowed. Hiring budgets tightened. Banks that had started to behave like tech companies moved back to offshoring and nearshoring. Demand dropped sharply. Especially for non-Dutch speakers. Supply didn’t just increase. It exploded. From the outside, it looked like abundance. From the inside, the system started cracking. Suddenly, companies weren’t hiring twenty engineers. They were rehiring one. So they became more cautious. More critical. More selective. That part is understandable. What surprised me was something else. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐢𝐭𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐲 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧. Candidates started telling the same story over and over: Generic rejection emails. No context. No explanation. No feedback. Sometimes no response at all. Just a template line: “Unfortunately, we’ve decided to move forward with other candidates.” That’s not just disappointing. It’s paralyzing. Without context, you can’t learn. Without feedback, you can’t improve. Without understanding 𝘸𝘩𝘺, rejection stops being information and becomes noise. Send more applications? Change your CV? Upskill? But where? And why? What I saw happening was simple economics, with real human impact: Too much supply. Not enough demand. And when systems are under pressure, empathy is often the first thing that disappears. Recruitment became transactional. Funnels. Ratios. Automated rejections. Colder. Here’s the uncomfortable truth: Most candidates weren’t rejected because they weren’t good enough. They were rejected because the bar moved. A lot. But almost nobody explained that. After 17 years, this is what I’ve learned: You don’t need to hire everyone. You don’t even need to give extensive feedback. A 𝐛𝐢𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐠𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐚𝐲, so the applicant can learn from it. Because people don’t mind rejection. They mind being treated like a number. Monday thought: Markets change. Hiring cycles tighten. Supply and demand will swing again. What people will remember is not that you said no, but 𝘩𝘰𝘸 you did it. Have a good start to the week. 👋

3 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐒𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭 𝐓𝐨 𝐈𝐟 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐖𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐮𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 In the last 17 years I have seen a lot in the Dutch software market. Although the last three years changed the rules. Change has never come so fast. Here’s what I see. I hope it helps you. 1️⃣ 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐀𝐈. 𝐍𝐨𝐰. Whether you like it or not, your role is shifting. AI won’t replace strong engineers tomorrow. But it will replace engineers who refuse to adapt. You’re moving from pure builder to conductor. From typing code to orchestrating systems. The ones who learn to work with AI instead of competing against it will multiply their output. The ones who ignore it will slowly become expensive. 2️⃣ 𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐚 𝐨𝐧𝐞-𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭. 𝐁𝐞 𝐚 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐲𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐭. The “I only do Java Spring Boot” era is fading. Stacks evolve. Companies migrate. Java → Kotlin Java → TypeScript Monolith → distributed On-prem → cloud-native If your identity is your stack, you’re vulnerable. If your identity is your problem-solving ability, you’re future-proof. Languages are tools. Thinking is leverage. 3️⃣ 𝐈𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫: ---> 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐃𝐮𝐭𝐜𝐡. This one is uncomfortable, but real. When demand was sky-high, English-only was fine. In tighter markets? Local language becomes a differentiator. It expands your options. It lowers friction. It signals long-term commitment. And in a competitive market, small signals matter. The market will open up again. It always does. But until then: Adapt. Expand. Invest in yourself. The engineers who treat this cycle as preparation will come out stronger than before. Have a great day 👋

“Java is the new Python” sounds like clickbait. It isn’t. The real shift isn’t the language. It’s the workflow. With JBang and Java 21, Java finally supports a scripting-first experience without sacrificing type safety, concurrency, or performance. The prototype-to-production cliff that pushed teams toward rewrites is quietly disappearing. I walked through concrete examples: – single-file scripts – instant HTTP services – typed CLIs – high-concurrency clients https://lnkd.in/e5gGiKmY #Java #SoftwareArchitecture #DeveloperProductivity #JVM

Your code works. Until the domain changes. And suddenly… everything leaks. That moment, when a small business change ripples through half your codebase, is usually not a tooling problem. It’s a 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦. On 12–13 February, we’re hosting 𝐚 𝐭𝐰𝐨-𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬-𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 where we deliberately zoom in on that pain point: 👉 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐊𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐧, with domain isolation at the core. Not theory. Not “FP for FP’s sake.” But 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬 that help you see where your design bends or breaks. Over two intensive days, you’ll work with 𝐊𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐧, 𝐒𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐭, 𝐀𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐰 and 𝐌𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐧 to: ✔️ Break your domain logic into 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫, 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐬 ✔️ Surface design flaws 𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 ✔️ Separate domain decisions from data and infrastructure concerns ✔️ Use functional patterns as a 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐬, not a dogma 👥 Who should join? This workshop is for engineers who: Build systems in Kotlin (or Java) Care about DDD, clean architecture, and long-term maintainability Want codebases that are easier to reason about when change hits (because it always does) The workshop is led by Jerre van Veluw, one of our Flock. consultants, known for translating complex ideas into approaches you can apply the very next day. ⚠️ Seats are limited We keep it small so there’s real interaction, deep discussion, and space to challenge ideas. 👉 All details & tickets here: https://lnkd.in/ebR3aTfA If you believe good design should fail fast, evolve safely, and support your domain, not fight it… we’d love to see you there. 🚀
