🛰️ Exciting news for the Dutch space ecosystem! Airbus Netherlands will build an optical ground station on NL Space Campus. Read more: ▶️ https://lnkd.in/gQ96YHTn Earlier this month, there were celebrations as Airbus and SES Satellites signed the ground lease agreement with the Municipality of Noordwijk. The plot is for a facility that will host a dedicated optical ground station to communicate with European Space Agency - ESA's Eagle-1 satellite and receive quantum safe keys via laser technology. Delivered by prime contractor TNO (advanced optics), the project brings together the expertise of FSO Instruments (sensor), Celestia STS (optical digital modem), Officina Stellare S.p.A (telescope and dome) and Airbus (real-time control system and system integration). There was a special event on 14 July at SBIC Noordwijk with presentations from Rob W. Postma of Airbus Netherlands, Alan Kuresevic of SES and alderman Pim van Strien. "This ground station will be the vital link connecting space to Earth using ultra-precise laser beams, exchanging quantum keys,” comments Rob Postma. “I could not be prouder of our team and our incredible partners – including ESA, SES, Netherlands Space Agency - NLSA, the Ministerie van Economische Zaken en Klimaat (Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs) and NXTGEN Hightech – as we build the foundation for next-generation European cybersecurity. Let’s make Eagle-1 a historic success!” Construction preparations are already underway, with the nearby SBIC Noordwijk building acting as a reference point for measurements on the site layout. 🛰️ We caught up with Meandair's co-founder Peter Novák 🌻 to find out about the #EO4Contrails project being supported by ESA Phi-Lab Netherlands! Read at: ▶️ https://lnkd.in/ez-FQr6E The #Meandair and NLR - Netherlands Aerospace Centre teams are working on a novel solution to tackle contrails using Earth observation and remote sensing technologies. “The core focus is to reduce the harmful creation of contrails by operators in the aviation industry. These contrails are only formed when the atmosphere’s humidity and temperature meet certain conditions,” comments Peter. “We will provide the most up-to-date and accurate weather forecasts about the atmosphere available, so that these aviation operators can easily navigate around these control sensitive areas of the atmosphere.” The Meandair technology for near-real-time weather forecasting, otherwise known as #nowcasting, was developed during incubation at ESA BIC Noordwijk before graduating in 2021. Alongside Peter, the Meandair team includes Antonín Komenda (Meandair co-founder and technical lead), André Bos (project manager) and Filip Švábik (meteorologist). The validation of the nowcasted contrails and impact is carried out by the NLR team of David Engler Faleiros, Liesbeth Wijn and Lukas Söffing. Management changes at SBIC Noordwijk announced with the departure of Martijn Leinweber. View news: ▶️ https://lnkd.in/dAf4M7jr The management board of Space Business Innovation Centre Noordwijk shares the news this month that the organisation’s chief operational officer (COO), Martijn Leinweber, has resigned after 16 years with the company. From June 2026, Rianne van de Poel, business development manager at SBIC, has the lead role in operational matters. The remit of managing the incubation programme of ESA Business Incubation Centre Noordwijk is now the responsibility of Jacobo Domingo. Martijn comments: “It has been a truly remarkable journey, shared with a passionate team in a dynamic and inspiring environment. I am grateful for everything we have built, learned and achieved together as a team.” The board and all within the SBIC space business community share best wishes with Martijn for every success in the future. ✨ Fantastic news that current #ESABICNoordwijk incubatee Regenrate won the regional heat of the Startup World Cup held in Amsterdam on 10 June (organised by Tech Makers) & will be heading to the US for the final in the fall and compete for the 1 million dollars prize! Congrats to CEO Alice Henry, who shared the news last week (https://lnkd.in/eyY4cz7u). The startup is scaling certified, intermediary crop (camelina) for the sustainable aviation fuel industry. Kudos to the whole team for onboarding the hundreds of farmers to join the mission and start growing the certified seeds. & the space link of this solution? 🛰️ Alice explains: "Our platform with the satellite imagery data will be the backbone of the certification process: it allows us to check eligibility according to the sustainability standards."
