Supporting Fragility in Distance Design Education

This paper outlines work in progress that seeks to support and develop online distance design edu... more This paper outlines work in progress that seeks to support and develop online distance design education for adult learners. At the core of this paper is the belief that design thinking is fragile and the systems we create to support design thinking are fragile. This has important implications for those seeking to implement immersive environments for teaching and learning in disciplines such as engineering, product design, environment design and architecture. This paper suggests we need to look backwards in order to look forwards; that by examining the characteristics of the traditional 'atelier' model of art and design education we might observe clues to a framework of teaching and learning in design that can embrace the opportunities presented by new digital technologies. The paper focuses on the use of Second Life as a component of a wider virtual design atelier and explores how Second Life might potentially offers a means of addressing fragile collaborative learning.

This paper explores certain types of student behaviour in design courses presented through an onl... more This paper explores certain types of student behaviour in design courses presented through an online distance learning environment and using a virtual design studio. It demonstrates that types of behaviour often considered to be passive, and therefore negative or less valuable than obviously active behaviours, can be significant evidence of student learning. Specifically, viewing other students' work is demonstrated to be a stronger (or equal) correlation of student success compared to any other behaviour measured in the virtual design studios studied. It is hypothesised that this activity is part of a larger set of social learning behaviours that contribute to a general social press or 'ecology' of studio learning. This finding has important implications for the design and implementation of virtual studios (technically and in learning design) and these are reported specifically for the interest and use of learning designers.

In this time delivery mechanisms have changed from non-interactive broadcasts to interactive media. A new generation of courses is emerging taught entirely online. This offers many challenges and opportunities This paper describes three tools that will be used in a new, level 1 course. Knowledge mapping, animated screen capture and an online studio space, OpenDesignStudio, which is a development of the Flickr photo-sharing interface. The advantage of the almost ubiquitous use of Web2 technologies is that students are communicating more and the potential for these technologies to support collaborative work in a learning environment is growing. The paper also discusses how assessment strategies might be re-considered to recognise and credit students who are increasingly using web resources to aid and augment their learning. This paper discusses the preliminary results of a two-year JISC funded project entitled ATELIER-D... more This paper discusses the preliminary results of a two-year JISC funded project entitled ATELIER-D: Achieving Transformation, Enhanced Learning and Innovation through Educational Resources in Design. The ATELIER-D project is based in the Design group at that Open University. The Open University is the largest distance teaching university in the UK. The design group, has around 1000 students a year studying its courses and materials are delivered in a variety of ways including print, online, course forums, and multi-media materials. There are six academics and a research assistand working on project, each of whom has, in the first year of the project, explored the use of different web2 based technologies to support student learning. This paper examines the teaching methods and learning outcomes of a new introductory course in design at the OU. which uses a combination of paper and ICT based learning resources to support the development of design knowledge and skills by a wide range of students. The course enables students of all levels of design ability to develop design skills through their studies. This paper argues that the teaching methods used within the course, demonstrate the potential for e-learning in the design curricula. The core e-learning resources discussed are a purpose made DVD which presents students with a suite of resources; A flexible learning environment that uses a set of related electronic conferences and a course website. The paper draws on student feedback to highlight the effectiveness of e learning for design education.

Initially, the studio environment was seen as a collaborative environment in which students follow the work of their peers’ through formal presentations, critiques and informal conversations. In the recent past, research on design studios has lost sight of the social component in studio education in favour of concentrating on the tutor-students relationship. As the delivery of design education has moved into online environments, scholars have begun to recognise that social engagement with peers may be of a greater importance to students’ design learning than previously acknowledged. This study looks at the qualities of learner-generated online content, as rated by experts, and h... more This study looks at the qualities of learner-generated online content, as rated by experts, and how these relate to learners’ engagement through comments and conversations around this content. The work uploaded to an Online Design Studio by students across a Design and Innovation Qualification was rated and analysed quantitatively using the Consensual Assessment Technique (CAT). Correlations of qualities to comments made on this content were considered and a qualitative analysis of the comments was carried out. It was observed that design students do not necessarily pay attention to the same qualities in learner-generated content that experts rate highly, except for a particular quality at the first level of study. The content that students do engage with also changes with increasing levels of study.
