  • When climate disasters strike, recovery cannot wait. In late 2025, Sri Lanka experienced one of the most devastating climate events in its recent history. Cyclone Ditwah triggered unprecedented flooding and around 1,200 landslides across all 25 districts, resulting in more than 640 lives lost, nearly 200 people reported missing, and an estimated US$4 billion in economic losses. Climate risk is no longer a future challenge, it's a present-day financial challenge for communities, businesses, and financial institutions. At Blue Marble, we're working with microfinance institutions (MFIs) in Sri Lanka to assess climate exposure and explore practical risk mitigation solutions. By combining climate risk analytics with parametric insurance, MFIs can provide faster financial support to vulnerable communities after extreme weather events while reducing loan repayment risks and strengthening the resilience of their lending portfolios. These are the conversations we're looking forward to at the Sri Lanka International Insurance Summit 2026, hosted by the Insurance Association of Sri Lanka (IASL). If you're attending the summit in Colombo from 10–12 August, we'd love to connect. Meet Vikas Singh, Head of Asia Business Development, to discuss how climate risk modelling and parametric insurance can strengthen resilience for underserved communities and the financial institutions that support them. cc: Vikas Singh #SLIIS2026 #ClimateRisk #ParametricInsurance #ClimateResilience #Microfinance #FinancialInclusion #BlueMarble

  • The climate isn't just changing. It's becoming more difficult to predict. For Shivkumari, farming is how her family earns a living. But today, every growing season brings new uncertainty. When crops need rain, temperatures soar. When sunshine is essential, heavy rains arrive instead. These shifting weather patterns make it harder to protect harvests, maintain a stable income, and plan for the future. Shivkumari's experience reflects a reality shared by millions of smallholder farmers across India, where climate change is making agriculture increasingly unpredictable. Through her Farmer Producer Organization (FPO), Shivkumari learned about parametric insurance and chose to enrol. By providing rapid financial support when predefined weather thresholds are met, this approach helps farming families recover more quickly from climate shocks and continue investing in their livelihoods. Blue Marble is proud to work alongside Samunnati Foundation, with support from SCBF and the Howden Foundation, to help strengthen climate resilience for farming communities across India. Every story like Shivkumari's is a reminder that climate resilience isn't just about responding to disasters, it's about helping communities plan for the future in the face of increasing climate uncertainty. 🎥 Watch Shivkumari share her story below. • What happens when it's simply too hot to earn a living? For millions of agricultural workers, extreme heat doesn't just mean discomfort, it can mean losing the income their families depend on. When temperatures rise, working outdoors becomes dangerous. Crops suffer. Water becomes scarcer. Every missed day of work creates another financial challenge. This is why protecting livelihoods is at the heart of climate resilience. Through a partnership involving Samunnati Foundation, SCBF, Howden Foundation, and Blue Marble, farming communities in India are gaining access to parametric insurance, designed to provide rapid financial support when predefined extreme heat thresholds are reached. One participant, Giriraj, shared how extreme heat affects nearly every part of his family's life, from daily wages to farming and water access. His story represents a challenge faced by millions of rural households as climate change continues to intensify. Climate risk is no longer a future problem. The question is whether financial protection can reach vulnerable communities before the next extreme weather event does. • How do we make insurance work for the people climate change impacts the most? That was the question at the heart of the panel "Strategy in Focus – From Risk Insight to Decisive Action" at the 22nd Asia Nat CAT & Climate Change Conference, where our Head of Asia Business Development, Vikas Singh, joined an engaging discussion moderated by Ludwig O. Federigan. A few perspectives Vikas shared: 🌱 Climate change is reshaping insurability. More frequent and severe climate events are pushing agriculture, small businesses, and gig workers to the margins, challenging traditional insurance models. 🤝 Partnerships are key to scaling protection. By working across the public and private sectors, Blue Marble is expanding parametric insurance for underserved communities through innovative products, customer education, and sustainable business models. 📈 Distribution drives scale. Loan-bundled and aggregator-led models remain the most effective way to expand access to insurance through trusted partners and innovative premium financing. 🌿 Insurance should reward resilience. Incentivizing regenerative agriculture and climate-smart farming helps strengthen livelihoods while improving long-term risk outcomes. 🤖 AI will strengthen both customer value and underwriting. By combining climate, satellite, sensor, and customer data, AI can enable smarter products, better risk assessment, and more personalized customer experiences. Many thanks to Ludwig Oscuro Federigan, EMDRCM, CBP. for moderating an insightful discussion, and to fellow panelists Oran Vongsuraphichet, Alexander Reyes, and Raymond Martin Aguilar for sharing their perspectives. It was a privilege to exchange ideas on building more resilient, inclusive insurance markets across Asia. cc: Vikas Singh #parametricinsurance #cropinsurance #microinsurance #financialinclusion #inclusiveinsurnace #impactinsurance #bluemarblemicro

  • ☕ What happens when a season of unpredictable weather threatens a coffee farmer's entire income? For many coffee farmers in Indonesia, this is no longer a future risk. It's happening now. Erratic rainfall and extreme weather are making it harder for farming communities to plan, invest, and protect their livelihoods. That's why Blue Marble, Zurich Indonesia, and Mercy Corps Indonesia launched a parametric insurance program in Dairi Regency, North Sumatra. But this isn't just about insurance. It's about confidence. Confidence to invest in farms. Confidence to recover more quickly after climate shocks. Confidence to plan for the future despite growing uncertainty. 🌱 The parametric insurance program helps by providing: ✅ Science-based weather triggers ✅ Faster, more transparent payouts ✅ Financial protection when climate shocks occur ✅ Greater financial literacy and resilience At Blue Marble, we're committed to making innovative climate risk solutions accessible to the communities that need them most. Because resilience isn't built after disasters happen. It's built before they do. cc: Reinhard Marcellino; Rinaldo Siagian #parametricinsurance #cropinsurance #microinsurance #financialinclusion #inclusiveinsurnace #impactinsurance #bluemarblemicro

Climate resilience isn't just about protection; it's about prosperity. 🌍 As climate risks intensify, this is no longer just a development question; it's an investment, insurance, and economic growth question. Last week, Blue Marble's CEO, Jaime de Piniés, joined leaders from the Insurance Development Forum (IDF), UNDP, governments, insurers, and development partners in London to discuss a critical challenge: how to strengthen local private sector engagement in risk financing and climate resilience. One message stood out: Countries cannot build resilience through external support alone. Long-term resilience requires strong local insurance markets, local expertise, local capital, and local institutions capable of understanding, pricing, and managing risk. At Blue Marble, we've seen firsthand that when local insurers are empowered, risk financing solutions become more sustainable, more scalable, and ultimately more impactful for the communities they serve. This is especially important as climate shocks become more frequent and severe. Without effective risk management, borrowing costs rise, investment slows, and development gains become harder to protect. But when risk is understood and managed, confidence grows. Investment follows. Economies become stronger. 🤝 We're proud to contribute to the ongoing conversation on how public-private partnerships can help build more resilient and investable economies around the world. A big thank you to the Insurance Development Forum and UNDP for convening this important discussion. As climate risks continue to grow, building resilience can no longer be the responsibility of governments alone. Strong partnerships between the public and private sectors will be essential to protecting communities, strengthening economies, and sustaining development gains. cc: Jaime de Piniés #parametricinsurance #cropinsurance #microinsurance #financialinclusion #inclusiveinsurnace #impactinsurance #bluemarblemicro

🌏 Catastrophe risk is no longer a future challenge; it is reshaping underwriting, capital allocation, resilience planning, and strategic decision-making today. Proud to share that Vikas Singh from Blue Marble will be speaking at the 22nd Asia Nat CAT and Climate Change Conference in Manila this June, joining industry leaders to discuss how insurers and reinsurers can move from risk insight to decisive action. 🎤 Vikas will participate in: Panel Session 4: “Strategy in Focus - From Risk Insight to Decisive Action” 🗓 26 June 2026 | ⏰ 1:25 PM Recent events across Asia continue to underscore the urgency of building resilience. Earlier this month, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake off the coast of the Philippines claimed more than 35 lives and injured over 200 people. Beyond the immediate human impact, the event has once again highlighted a persistent challenge across the region: economic losses often far exceed insured losses, leaving communities, businesses, and governments to shoulder the burden of recovery. As climate volatility intensifies across APAC, the industry is increasingly exploring parametric insurance and climate risk financing solutions that can help close protection gaps and enable faster, more resilient recovery after catastrophic events. At Blue Marble, we are working alongside local partners to expand access to climate and disaster risk protection across the region, from supporting farmers in Aceh, Indonesia, where our parametric insurance programme recently triggered payouts following catastrophic flooding, to protecting coffee farmers through innovative insurance solutions, advancing livestock protection programmes in Kyrgyzstan, and pioneering heat-risk coverage for women workers in India through our partnership with SEWA. The discussion will explore how insurers can respond to a rapidly changing risk landscape, from rethinking products and expanding parametric solutions to strengthening climate resilience, fostering public-private partnerships, and finding new ways to close protection gaps before disasters strike. As protection gaps continue to widen, the question is no longer whether catastrophe risks will impact communities and businesses, but how insurers, reinsurers, governments, and development partners can work together to build resilience at scale. • In the Kyrgyz Republic, more than 9000 vulnerable rural households are already protected against climate shocks. That’s not a concept. That’s resilience in action. During a recent mission, InsuResilience Solutions Fund (ISF), Blue Marble, the World Food Programme, government counterparts, insurers, and development partners came together to review progress and help shape the next phase of parametric insurance in the country. What’s driving this progress? • Strong collaboration across public and private partners • Growing evidence that parametric insurance is becoming a practical climate risk management tool, not just a pilot • Continued commitment from stakeholders, including support for premium financing mechanisms, working to strengthen financial protection for vulnerable communities But the most important insights came from the field. Farmers and local authorities spoke clearly about the rising impact of droughts and the need for solutions that protect livelihoods before disaster strikes. For many households, this support already means being able to secure livestock feed during dry periods and reduce income-related risks. The path forward is becoming clearer: • Strengthening insurers’ capacity • Expanding awareness and trust in rural communities • Advancing public subsidy mechanisms to further scale Encouragingly, there is growing interest from national institutions to integrate agricultural insurance into Kyrgyzstan’s broader risk management system. The question is no longer whether parametric insurance can play a role. It’s how quickly we can scale sustainable climate risk solutions and deepen collaboration across governments, insurers, development partners, and communities. If you’d like to learn more or explore opportunities to support scaling these solutions, we’d be glad to connect. cc: Meerim Kaibalieva; Panuel Rozario Prince #parametricinsurance #cropinsurance #microinsurance #financialinclusion #inclusiveinsurnace #impactinsurance #bluemarblemicro
