Rising temperatures are changing risk patterns across the world, making extreme heat one of the fastest growing climate risks. 🌡️Unlike floods or earthquakes, HW may not always leave visible damage, but their impacts on lives, health, livelihoods, agriculture, infrastructure, energy systems and economies can be severe. Pakistan is increasingly exposed to this challenge. Prolonged high temperatures, rapid urbanization, population growth and changing climate patterns are increasing the scale of heatwave risk. 📡 Using the #NatCatModel, NDRMF has developed heatwave #intensity, #population #exposure and #hotspot #maps to understand how heat risk expands under different return-period scenarios and who may be exposed. The maps show a clear message: extreme heat is not limited to rare events or isolated locations. 💡Under the RP-5 scenario, extreme heat already covers nearly #30% of the mapped area. Under RP#100 conditions, this increases to around #76%, showing how heat risk can spread across multiple provinces at the same time. 💡The exposure picture is even more important. Around #73 million people are estimated to be exposed to extreme heat under RP-5 conditions. Under RP-50 conditions, this increases to approximately #246 million people, 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒘𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒏 𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒏𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒍𝒚 173 𝒎𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒑𝒆𝒐𝒑𝒍𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝒎𝒐𝒅𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒅 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒖𝒓𝒆. 📡 Hotspot analysis shows that major urban and densely populated districts face the highest concern. Lahore records the largest increase in exposed population, followed by Faisalabad and Gujranwala, while several districts across Punjab, Sindh, KP and Karachi also emerge as important hotspots. 📡 These maps are not only visual outputs. They are decision-support tools that can help identify where heat risk is increasing, where exposed populations are concentrated, and where resilience investments may need greater focus. The purpose of NatCat is to support risk-informed planning by combining hazard intensity with exposure data to support risk-informed planning, translating climate risk into actionable insights for adaptation, resilient infrastructure, urban planning and protecting vulnerable communities. Because heat risk is not only about rising temperatures, it is about rising exposure, increasing vulnerability, and acting before today's extremes become tomorrow's normal. From prolonged #heatwaves, accelerating #glaciermelt in the northern regions and record-breaking temperatures to growing #stress on #water resources, #ecosystems, and communities, the #impacts of a warming #climate are unfolding before us. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 #1.5°𝐂 #𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐢𝐬 misunderstood 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 '𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭'. 𝐈𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 - 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐳𝐨𝐧𝐞. Even within this threshold, communities can face intensifying #heatwaves, #floods, #water stress, #ecosystem disruption, and growing #climaterisks. The lesson is clear: #resilience #cannot be built #after a #disaster #strike; It requires #timelyaction, #informedinvestments, and #climateresilience initiatives that #reduce #vulnerabilities #before #risks become #disasters.
