History through Texts: Sinitic Buddhism in the Tangut State. Huayan, Chan and the "White Cloud" Transmissions in Xixia

This study is a partial summary of what is currently known about the transmission of various dime... more This study is a partial summary of what is currently known about the transmission of various dimensions of the Sintiic Buddhism in Xixia. The paper proceeds from an understanding that the Tangut Buddhism was a correct representation of Sintic Buddhism in the Northern China during the 11 th-13 th centuries. The paper specifies two lineages of the Huayan transmission in Xixia, and identifies one of them as a local one, whereas the other one is imported from the Hangzhou area. The paper discusses the transmission of the Platform Sūtra, of the texts by Qingliang Chengguan and Guifeng Zongmi, and finally tries to locate the works by Baiyun Shizi in the context of Tangut Buddhism. The general conclusion is that the research of the Tangut Buddhist texts should continue within the framework of the study of East Asian Buddhism, and not as of an independent entity.

ABSTRACT The paper introduces part of the Tangut textual corpus, associated with the Bodhicaryāva... more ABSTRACT The paper introduces part of the Tangut textual corpus, associated with the Bodhicaryāvatāra and the ritual composition by Jitāri, Bodhicittotpādasamādānavidhi. We conclude that in Xixia (1038–1227) there was a textual cluster revolving around these two texts. Tanguts generated a local tradition of studying both of these texts, whereas the Bodhicittotpādasamādānavidhi appeared to have been an important text prescribed for study by the Tangut monks. We discuss the versions of the texts and their commentaries.
