It is good for us, good for our world! Everyday creativity, our “originality of everyday life,” ... more It is good for us, good for our world! Everyday creativity, our “originality of everyday life,” offers health, joy, and life meaning, plus a fresh new worldview and view of self-in-world. One sees self as process, life as profoundly interconnected, emergent, surprising, and dynamically changing, with health related to qualities including our change potential, conscious awareness, openness, and non-defensiveness, as we “go with” –and add our unique piece to—this flow. We all have universal creative potential, essential in evolution, yet it often goes unnamed and underdeveloped. Framed by the “Four Ps of Creativity” (product, person, process, press) this treatment highlights process. It turns the camera around from the usual preoccupation with creative product to look back—to explore our creative process and how this changes the creative person. This can be for the better, enhancing connections with life, beauty, possibility, each other, and our future. In addition, environmental press can build or kill creative potential. Happily we can shift environment toward vastly healthier ends. Part of this picture includes unusual topics less common in the creativity literature, including “normality,” beauty, nuance, creative relationships, spiritual development, and higher consciousness.

It highlights important content over process via five examples whose nature is more fully revealed in a nonlinear dynamical systems (NDS) frame. The intent is to show when our choice of perspective can be crucial in avoiding some high-stakes misunderstandings. Each frame is introduced by a common belief that is being challenged, for example, that we are “in control” or “can fix anything.” The five examples concern: (a) our dynamic selves; (b) mental health, positive deviance, and creative balance; (c) the sudden events of COVID-19; (d) human competition vs. collaboration and the “Lost Darwin”; and (e) avoiding environmental catastrophe in the face of events we cannot fully control.

The relationship is not simple, however, nor does it apply to everyone with a mood disorder or everyone who is creative. A creative advantage associated with liability for bipolar disorders may involve multiple psychological processes and occur with different clinical pictures, including psychiatrically healthy relatives of bipolar individuals. Some research suggests that treatment of mood disorders can liberate greater creative potential as well as diminish suffering. To nurture creative potential associated with bipolar liability, we need sensitivity to individuals' psychological strengths as well as their symptoms.

Next, we review complementary evidence for a relationship between creativity and mood elevation. We then discuss factors that may mediate these associations, with a particular focus on evidence for personality traits that are associated with both familial liability for mood disorders and enhanced creative potential. Relationships between creativity and psychopathology: an evaluation and interpretation of the evidence

An age-old belief links creativity with psychopathology. The present paper examines the degree of... more An age-old belief links creativity with psychopathology. The present paper examines the degree of scientific support for this belief and proposes a scheme for interpretation of the evidence within a framework of multiple causation. First, three major theories are considered; these differ fundamentally regarding whether creative ability and/or motivation may be associated with psychopathology. Next, creativity research involving cognitive, personality, motivational, and environmental variables is examined in this theoretical context. Results do not emerge as definitive for any one type of position. It is suggested instead that the origins of creativity may be heterogeneous; separate explanations may be required for distinct S subgroups, to potentially include subgroups within traditional psychiatric diagnostic categories. Epidemiological research is then considered. Despite methodological shortcomings, this work as a whole appears to support elevated levels of psychopathology among recognized creators compared to the general population, and familial (and perhaps even genetic) patterns of creativity-psychopathology association. Affective psychosis is particularly prominent across studies although design features limit full consideration of other pathologies. Some etiological hypotheses are then indicated within the framework of a proposed, inclusive classification scheme. Finally, considerations for further research are discussed, and the potential importance of continued inquiry in this area is emphasized.
